Hi folks

I have a Lancia Y 840, which is identical mechanically to a Series 1 Punto, and for a while now it has been displaying symptoms which I think might be an ECU fault. It failed the French MoT equivalent on emissions, and although I replaced the cat, lambda, coil packs, plugs, leads and exhaust and just managed to scrape a pass (I think the guy may have been cutting me some slack!), it still smells funny. It has also burnt a hole in the back bumper, presumably because the exhaust gases are so hot (the Y exhaust exits inside the bumper). And now it has started misfiring quite badly, and still smells funny. I am getting more and more convinced it must be the ECU, but before I try to get one I wanted to get an OBD reader to see if it is showing any faults. But all the ones I can find on eBay have the wrong kind of plug - my socket is the small oval one that is like a lot of the connectors on our cars. I have attached a pic of the socket and the ECU, and I would be grateful for any help - e.g. if anyone else has had the same fault and/or if anyone has found a good and preferably cheap code reader!

Thanks Chris - much appreciated! And no, I hadn't thought of the crank position sensor - another job for the list!

Would you care to quote the emissions figures

So we know what is good..and what is not..

Im always doubtful of 'ECU FAULTS'

the device is reliant on information from sensors.. any break in that chain..

Sensor
Plug
Cable
Plug

Can mess it up before the ECU plays a part

(Have a look at this as a prime example)

Thanks - really appreciate that! I an sceptical about ECU faults too, but I was running out of ideas! I will get the emissions printout and post it tomorrow - it is in the car, and the car isn't here tonight.

Varesecrazy - I am really sorry! I don't usually ignore people when they are trying to help me! I have been away for 2 weeks (Italy - best place to go!), and there was supposed to be wifi where we were staying but there wasn't! And I have no data on my phone, so it has been a rough 2 weeks! I also forgot to scan the figures before I left, but I have done it now and here they are. I have done the fail and the pass emissions - the fail was on the 3rd figure (lambda), and I got a new lambda probe and it fixed the problem for the test, at least. But there is something definitely wrong, because it has a horrible misfire, smells funny, the 'throttle sticks' - revs stay high when you take your foot off, and I have checked and it is not the cable. So any assistance or advice would be gratefully received!

Sorry - they have come out the wrong way round! The pass is on the left and the fail is on the right.

Take a look to this post. I had some of your failures https://www.fiatforum.com/punto/298002-mk1-punto-idle-revving-high-idle-2.html

As summary,
-For high revs check the throttle sensor. If you replace it bear in mind there is a reset process to make the new one work
- for the smelling and misfiring look for air leaks in the air intake or in the exhaust manifold, both can be the root cause of the high levels of gases
