Intercooler/Turbo for my Punto TD

Hi all, so i want to mount an intercooler on my Punto 1.7 TD, i know that some Punto's come with one from factory, the same for the Uno's, and i wanted to know where you can mount it on your engine bay, if anyone knows where the intercooler installs, it will be very helpful, because installing a "universal" one is going to be more difficult for sure (or not) so, i just want to know your experience with that.
And what turbos i can install, like "plug and play" or without messing to much with the engine?
Thank you all for your help!

Re: Intercooler/Turbo for my Punto TD

I've never looked in a mk1 diesel engine bay so not gonna be much help tbh but...

this here is what the GT setup looks like.

to try put that into perspective for you, on a GT the turbo is hanging down the back of the engine, the intercooler is mounted on the bar running along the bottom end of the bumper and a bolt up top to the slam panel. In the GT it also has an oil cooler that mounts to the rear of the intercooler.

Having not looked at a diesel punto I cant say for certain if it would just fit there without clearance issues with anything. But i can tell you that a universal FMIC is really easy to fit on a GT, but the GT has a widemouth front bumper and i dont think the diesel models do, although i stand to be corrected.

Turbo wise, I can't help. But if it were me I'd find out what turbo it has and then talk to a turbo supplier/manufacturer and tell them what you want to replace and what performance you want from the new one etc and see what they suggest in terms of size etc. Its very unlikely you will get something that will bolt on and not need the downpipe modifying as well though

Re: Intercooler/Turbo for my Punto TD

All I can tell u is my intercooler is right at the front on the passenger side so check if u have space there my turbo is buried right in the engine bay it's a nightmare job to change u should look at the GT engine and compare it to yours to give u a better perspective an intercooler is pretty small so should be able to squeeze it in there somewhere good luck T1 turbo mitsubishi i think 😂😂 mitsubishi turbo hmmm if they can put the 2.0l coupe engine in the fiat I'm sure u can do the mods your saying, so diesel turbos don't have intercooler interesting. I don't no much about diesel petrol engine all my life.

Re: Intercooler/Turbo for my Punto TD

Thanks for your help! I looked to my engine bay and underneath the coolant reservoir, like, next to the radiator, it looks like and empty space with holes to bolt something on, might be where the intercooler and the oil radiator goes.
Actually i have the "wide" front bumper on my punto, like the GT ones, minus the headlight washers.
Maybe i will put a universal intercooler on the front, and a mitsubishi turbo just too give it a little extra power
I saw people put the turbo from a Audi A6 2.5 TDI V6, the GT2052V, the one thing that i don't understant is how the got the variable geometry from the turbo to work, but oh well, might just apply a intercooler just to give him more fresh air
