Hi all, Punto 75sx 1.2.

The fuel pump of this car can be heard working quite loud (not normal) when the car is running. Could it be a sign of wear and tear ?

We have a problem with the car. It is misfiring but have checked literally everything. I'm starting to think that the issue might be a defective fuel pump:mad:.

TIA

My 1994 Mk1 was misfiring intermittently and refusing wide throttle openings. I unscrewed the big plastic ring holding the pump in the tank, and blew through the in and out pipes gently with the air line, and cleaned the cloth strainer at the base of the unit. Replaced with a new sealing ring, been OK ever since.

the pipe(s)? that come out of the pump go brittle with age and have a propensity to break off,it must be 10 years since i worked on these but it wasnt nice finding out the hard way and then having to find a pump (there were 2 types depending on engine too)
these days i very carefully waft my heatgun on these type of fixings prior to undoing them but obviously im super careful (i used to use a kettle of boiling water
i bought a pump removal tool off ebay for the plastic ring for under a £10 its on e of the best pieces of kit ive ever bought as it turns a nightmare job into a breeze on any modern petrol pump in the tank

You're right about the nylon pipes cracking or breaking off the pump body, caused sometimes by the stiff feed and return pipes being slightly too short and putting things under stress.

I saw mine were cracking so reinforced them with some 6mm copper tube reduced with emery and slipped down inside with 24h araldite to seal things. After poking things through to make sure all was clear the pump is still soldiering on nearly 20 years later!

I cleaned out the bottom cloth filter and blew through with compressed air, a dodgy pump was given a new long lease of life. The muck all comes from inside the tank or the rubber sealing ring decomposing, as the filter is downstream and therefore does not protect the pump at all.
