Hi all,

After some advice if at all possible?
My mum has a 1994 punto 1.2 elx that broke down the other day... it cut out and refused to start and she was recovered home.
So... A few weeks ago it also wouldn't start, I checked the crank sensor it was oily, A quick clean and it started.
I suspected this again so I replaced it but still nothing.
Looking further there is no spark at any plug, the fuel pump isn't priming and the red injector light that usually comes on for a few seconds isnt.(plugs also dry)
No blown fuses anywhere.. checked glovebox, by ignition switch and the 2 attached to the bulkhead. No obvious wiring damage,

I'm thinking the ecu is dead? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance

Mark

It could be a couple of things, one being the ecu. First I would check the ignition relays.
You say it is a 94 ELX with a 1.2 engine. I thought a 94 ELX would have a 1.6 engine, but I don't doubt you. The reason I mention it is that the 1.6 has its ecu mounted behind the dash under the heater matrix and when (not if) that leaks, it will drip onto the ecu and cause damage. The solution is one of prevention, putting the ecu in a sealed plastic band with silica gel for good measure. If you have a 1.2 your ecu will be under the bonnet. Is there any chance that it could have got wet?

Hi thanks for the reply,

No the ecu is on the drivers side front wheel arch inner(I presume this is correct? No I don't think so it's been hot the last week here no puddles... it's certainly dry now... it's a 75 elx 1.2. Which are the ignition relays?

Thanks

Mark

That all sounds correct. I am not familiar with the layout of the 1.2 engine, but on mine they are located under a plastic cover held on with two screws at the rear of the engine bay, fixed to the bulkhead.

Thanks I shall try and replace that relay next. There is one big white one behind the 2 fuses... this sound correct?

Just a thought, although there is no spark or fuel The engine is turning over on the starter, could it still be the relay?

Thanks
Mark

I have just checked the manual and it appears that the relays on yours are in a completely different position from mine. It is listed as being at the rear of the fuse box. Yes the engine will still turn over even if the relay is not working.

So after checking the relays which were okay I went under the bonnet again to check the big relay under the black cover, and I could hear a faint sparking, and then the fuel pump primed... under the black cover the small 5a fuse was arcing out... Not blown... replaced it and she started!
Thanks for your help and advice much appreciated

I have noticed that the crank sensor on my 1994 Punto 55 literally wears away ! It was several mm further away from the toothed wheel than when I first began to maintain this car from new. Must be dust and grit being flung at it from the toothed wheel? I replaced it with one from a scrapyard, that was definitely a bit longer and a better shape at the end. There must be a critical distance beyond which it cannot see the timing point. Just a thought, it's cheap enough to replace.

Hi all,

I also have a Punto 75, 1994 and I am experiencing the same starting problem as chesh (link)

The problem arises when the car rest for a while after driving and the engine cools down to lukewarm.
It wouldn't start from the first attempt, but from the second.
When the engine is cold, I don't have this problem.

Until now, I have changed and tested various parts. (cranckshaft sensor, coolant temperature sensor, EVAP valve, spark plugs, IAC valve, fuel pump, tested the injectors, TPS sensor, fuel pressure, oxygen sensor, MAP sensor, coil ignition)
I tried with another ECU and ECM relay. However, the problem has not been solved.

This is a spark plug after 11.000 km. (Denso TT)

What do you think about the mixture? Do you think it is too lean?
Otherwise, the engine is in perfect condition and works very well. The only issue is with the starting described above that I can't seem to fix.

Please advise. Thank you.

P.S. I apologise for the large picture, I am not yet authorised to post links.

I also have exactly the same problem and I don't know how to fix it either :(

Mine is a 1996 punto 75 SX
