Hi guys.
Want to do an oil change and the manual says 15w/40 semi but am I right in thinking that most fiat mechanics started using 5w/40 fully syn oil on these 16v motors in more recent years or should I stick to the book spec?
Car is on 82,000 miles.
I think these have hydraulic lifters too dont they and as the car came with limited history and the oil looks minging is it safe to run an oil flush through then do the oil and filter?

Sick of trying to do right on Fiats only for them to be worse afterwards lol.....

I've always used 5w/30 or 40 with many Fiat engines to keep the shim noise at a minimal with 1.1 8v

If it's got hydraulics I would stick with the factory grade, but buying Fiat Selenia is madness as you can buy the same spec in other brands for much less money. If you are in a warm climate a grade heavier will do no harm, if in Siberia in February a few grades lighter would be a good idea. Basically, it's horses for courses.

Are you sure the manual says 15W40? That's an unusual grade.

If not, regular semi-synthetic 10W40 will do the job.

You can use a flush first.. but if there's a lot of black in the engine oil, I'd change the oil again in 6000 miles time. The oil should remain dirty (dark brown) but clear.. not black like diesel engine oil.
