Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

i am buying this cheap punto with the head gone. what i was thinking was, would a stilo engine go into this car with a mk1 sporting 16v loom that i have from a parts sporting. i would love to drop a 16v into this but stilos are the easier car to get a hold of. what things, problems would i run into? any insight on this conversion, because either way the car will be getting a new engine.
Thanks

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

what stilo engine are you talking?

The main issue I see right off the bat is stilo is fly by wire and the punto is not, so you'd need to either convert the punto to use fly by wire throttle and then you could use the stilo ecu, thats in theory. I don't know a huge amount about stilos, like do they use canbus - alot of newer cars ecu's get very upset without all the other body computers and stuff plugged in and i couldnt say if thats true or not of a stilo.

So the easier way round to do this would be to use the punto ecu instead - this would mean taking the inlet side off and using punto stuff and throttle body etc.

Whats the ultimate aim here, you seem to have a sporting mk1 punto already and a cinquecento from your posts. Whats the reason for this P60? Is it just to save it, you gonna use it as a daily or what? The reason being if its just to make it a running car then Rolan is right really, best and cheapest option is to just fix it. But depends what your overall plan is for it i guess.

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

It's another project. I have a cinq sporting, mk1 punto sporting, 1990 bis 126 and this would be a good project. I bought a parts mk1 sporting complete so I have all trim, engine loom, 2 inlet manifolds with cable trottle and even the engine and box, but they were left in the rain... What I meant was just use the bare engine from a stilo and use punto loom. Would it have the same sensor or more( cam sensor) . Basically I'd be just using the lump. Make it a sleeper but with all sporting components.

I could either buy a car and put all good parts from the rotten sporting, or scrap the whole lot, so this makes sense to me.

As far as I know the stilo is a similar system to punto.

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

ah gotcha, yeah the newer valver in the stilo should work fine. It may have some differences in the head and also the mk1 punto 16v has livelier cams. Hopefully the head is ok on your donor then best option would be to swap that onto the stilo bottom end and then its basically a mk1 16v engine but 1368cc - i've been in several 16v swapped centos and the 1.2 punto ecu does not run the 1.4 1005 perfect but it works well enough, its basically the setup most 1.4 16v centos are running, a 1.4 using 1.2 ecu and inlet etc.

All that said, i'd be more tempted to make your cento a 16v and just fix this P60 - or swap a P75 head onto it instead

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

Yes I see, I have a donor 75 for a seicento sporting swap. My cinq only has 48000 miles so I'll be keeping that gem of an engine.
Not sure what I'll do with the p60 yet but it will be saved
You can be expecting a seicento p75 swap thread coming soon too.
I have many puntos, cinqs and even a 126, so I'm handy with Fiats in general
😂

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

1.2 FIREs changed around 2000, they were modernised (16v's certainly..) with a cam sensor in the head and a different block / sump design. So a newer engine should fit and work with older (simpler) electronics but without the later performance / emissions enhancements. The later ones had a different Cat installation and an extra lambda sensor.

I agree that the sensible option would be a careful refresh / repair of the original P60 engine, or alternatively the P75 upgrade.

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

So I have the car, and it seems to have the 866 cam and power steering for a 99, it's a later spec car. I am going the 1.2 16v route as I have a engine here... And a sporting to compare it to.
Here's the car

Looks like a nice car, but most importantly you have some genuine Fiat Tipo aftermarket alloys on it, from the "Brio" catalogues that the dealers had.

Just needs some proper black / blue Fiat centre caps!

Re: Mk1 Punto 60s, Head gasket gone

So today I have decided to do the head gasket and drive it till the test is out, and then 16v it. But what I need to know is, is the 1242 8v also non interference. I know the cinqs are as I did a tb on one but not sure about the 8v punto. I heard from a good friend who has a local fist specialist says that in an odd case he has seen the 1.2 drop a valve and bend it.

Any light on this?
