Recently received the safety recall for corroded ridgid break pipes.
Trouble is I've already had to have two replaced a year ago to pass the MOT. Cost me £150 as the tank had to come off due to one pipe being routed under it, clever design idea that!!
Has anyone had any success in getting fiat to cough up the money.

If genuine parts was fitted then fiat will pay the amount which they would pay the dealer for fitting them. But you must also have a receipt which is a vaild vat receipt. Usually the dealer with check to see if been fitted correctly and up to standard.

anyone know how much the pipes cost so i can change them myself? my punto's don't look too good, but the car's had 3 owners so i doubt it qualifies for the recall!

FIAT: Fart In A Tin

as a follow up.
Fiat dealer inspected renewed pipes, said they were up to fiat standard!! even though they are not genuine fiat parts.( do fiat supply ready made brake pipes?) and has agreed to pay me what they would get paid by fiat had they done the job, minus £20 to cover their costs incurred claiming from fiat for a warranty job.
Could be worth trying to get your pipes replaced even if your car has had 3 previous owners.

i am not the 1st ownwer of my punto, but i informed fiat i was the new owner.

i got the recall letter...pipes werent replaced though, just sprayed with some kind of anti corrossion substance. Looked like major oil leak at first.

Feared the worst this morning as I took my 95N Punto Sporting for it's MOT. I really was expecting a fail around the front nearside suspension as there is an awful clunking noise while on a bad road surface. I was right in the end, it DID fail, not on the clunking noise but on corroding brake pipes. So, I took my Recall Letter from FIAT down to the main dealers and it's now booked in on Friday for a Free of Charge brake pipe replacement. An MOT fail therefore is only going to cost me 30 quid as I wont be charged a retest fee! Am I a happy bunny or what??? :)
PS - The clunking is due to a slightly worn steering rack, not critical and something I can live with until I get a new car in the new year sometime.

Isn't a recall independent of the number of owners the vehicle has had. I mean if there is something defective with a part, regardless if its not the original owner, that part is still defective and should be replaced on a 'recall', which is very different from a 'warranty'.
Out of curiousity, what years and model were covered under this recall??
thanks

Was only the 94 - 95 models effected. had a recall on my old punto about 2 years ago and was delt with, be it bloody slowly taking a week at Arnold clark.
Just as well really as when we got the notice from Fiat, the pipes gave way within a month of receaving the letter

Well well well, i e-mailed to Fiat 9 months ago to let them know that the brake pipes on my 1999 Punto were shot and that i considered that all mk 1 puntos had a problem...their response was underwhelming and indicated that later mk1 models were not affected by the brake pipe problem...I replaced the affected pipes myself and now i have just got this recall notice sufice to say I am not amused, perhaps if fiat used proper materials in their pipes they might have more than 4 years life...our 11 year old uno still has all its original pipes so it can be done.
I have seen a couple of Fiat Dealer replacement pipe jobs on puntos and they used copper tube brake pipe after all would you buy your pipe from the same source as the rusty originals!!!
Take your cars to the dealers and make them replace the pipes..also ask for details of which pipes were renewed and if possible check to make sure this is correct.

I booked mine in for what I thought was the work to change the suspect faulty pipe. When I went to collect the car I was told that it had only been an 'inspection' (grrrrr) and that they were going to have to order a FULL set of pipes including the 'Flexibles' and 'Bulkheads' (does anyone know what they are?) So, I'm now waiting for them to get all these in stock and for a phonecall to let me know when the work can be done. They also did tell me that the recall is now contacting owners of S Reg vehicles.

Mine has been recalled and this is a 1999 model so i think we can assume that all mk1 puntos are affected.
The reason for the 'flexibles & Bulkheads' is probably due to the fact that it is unlikely that these will be in good enough condition to dismantle and replace due to age and corrosion and don't be suprised if the rear wheel cylinders need replaced for the same reason.

there are details of the recall on the AA website
<theaa.com/allaboutcars/recalls>
The Fiat customerservice no. is afreefone line 0800 717000

but you are probably going to get a better answer from your local dealer who can enter your reg. & tell you if the motor has been recorded as checked .

That AA site is down:I

This worries me a bit. I'm going to have a dig through my service record later and see if the pipes on mine were ever replaced.

Does anyone know of another decent site that lists all recalls for the Punto? Or, for that matter, does anyone have a definitive list?
