Please knowledgeable people I need advice, Having cut my teeth on old cars with points etc, I now need to come into the 21st Century and get some gear to connect the Punto Cabrio to a laptop, I am completely at sea with this so what do I need to buy? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I highly recommend Multiecuscan www.multiecuscan.net It's 50 euros to register and get full functions but you can try it for free. You will need a interface lead and probably adaptors. To be sure exactly what you need we need to know the engine and year of your car. Typically a "modified" ELM 327 USB lead is what you need. something like ebay item 271275445368, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271275445368? costing £15. A similar item with adaptors and KL lead for older cars is ebay item 161715574389 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161715574389? for £20. So for £50-60 you have a full system assuming you have a laptop.

Yes have a laptop, running windows 10, will that program run with 10 or do I need an older system? I have an older laptop that I keep in the work shed for all my motoring stuff that is XP. BTW way car is 2000 1.2 16V, thanks for the input.

OK I give up! Not into cryptic stuff anyway, watched that and saw the reference to manifold but WTF has that to do with wanting to do diagnostics?

Hi,
Multiecuscan will run on Windows XP through 10. I recommend you use it on the old XP laptop. It does not need a lot of processing power and you don't want to drop you good laptop while working on the car.

Your car is in a crossover period. So to access all modules you need both the ELM and KL interfaces and adaptor leads, i.e. the second (£20) interface kit referenced from ebay.

Hi Robert,
Many thanks for the clear, concise information, just what I needed! The forum is all about that sort of thing. This is it working as it should. Just don't get the other post at all.

Neither do I, but I don't watch the F&F movies or see the point in drifting either

if you look on the multiecuscan site it tells you exactly what cables you need, I kinda disagree with g8rpi on what you need, pretty sure I am right but wage in g8rpi is i am wrong somehow.

this page shows all the cars it can connect to. http://www.multiecuscan.net/SupportedVehiclesList.aspx
scroll down it and it has a load of codes in coloured boxes showing what you need to connect to different parts of the car.
I have zero experience with actual cabrios and they are not seperately listed but they are basically just a P85 16v as far as the ecu is concerned (assuming its not a 1.6 90, pretty sure you have 1.2 16v one). That means it has a 18FD ecu and all you need the KLL/Vagcom lead and a 3 pin adaptor.
The 3-pin to OBD adaptor is not in either of them kits posted already - what i used on my old 85 ecu was this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291215844541 (just throw the disc that comes with away, you don't need it)

So the 3-pin adaptor connects to the diagnostics port on the engine loom (right near the ecu, usually has a little cap on it to stop crud getting in the contacts), and the little red and black crocodile clips connect to the battery, the the big plug to the KL cable and the USB on the other end in the laptop.

Connect all the wires, turn the ignition on (car doesn't have to be actually running but you can do it that way too and monitor all the ecu inputs), open MES and top left select fiat, then on the right scroll down to Punto 85 16v, bottom left box make sure its on engine and then the bottom right should have 'Magnetti Marelli IAW 18FD Injection'

like this:

Then press connect, it pops up some boxes about keys, just press yes. I have noticed over the years that sometimes it says make sure the key is off rather than ignition on position which is wrong, you have to have the ignition on always so the ecu actually is powered up or it can't connect.

Also, depending on what you want to do you will prob be ok to just have the free version, it can read and clear codes, it can even datalog albeit with limited channels. I only ever had to buy a licence when i started trying ot use it on newer cars like my 500 and my old alfa 159, you will prob be totally fine with the free version.

Hi,
I don't have a Punto (Croma 1.9 16V) but @digger58 says he has a 2000 1.2 16V Punto. According to the MES compatibility list the nearest model year is a 1999 1.2 16V This needs KL and adaptor 3 for the airbags (no ELM327 compatibility) and ELM 327 for power steering, Body computer and CANBUS (no KL compatibility). The engineECU will work with either interface. There is no requirement for the 3 pin adaptor (which only works with KL). The next year up ('03) has similar requirements, the airbags need KL only and CAN ELM 327 only.
I think you are looking at the older model Puntos, but if it's a 2000 registration I cant see it was sitting around all that long to be earlier than a 1999 model year. The VIN, or presence of a OBDII / EOBD socket would tell either way.

the '99 on that list means the mk2 punto (1999-2003), cabrio is a mk1 and has a mk1 engine... if its a '00 cabbie it must've sat unregistered for a while before being sold the first time as '99 is the last year of the mk1. So if it is a '00 cabrio it must be one of the very last ones sold in the UK!!

but yeah, the cabbie is basically a mk1 1242 16v sporting without a roof, so as far as the list goes on MES site its a Punto 85 16v ;)

My Punto knowledge is lacking

Even according to Wikipedia " Approximately 55,000 cars were built between 1994 and 1999, although the last cars were registered in 2000"

Number is 053717, so a fairly late one if 55K was the production run.Fairly sure the connection is the 3 pin plug. Thanks for the input. Hope I'll start to learn about all this now.
