jarrow - tyne and wear
Ive just replaced the rear drums and shoes on my punto 1995 1.1 55sx and found that the drivers side front shoe was almost worn away comapred to hardly any wear ont he other 3 shoes. Since ive change them the drivers side rear is binding really badly and the wheel gets too hot to touch. Ive also noticed that when i adjusted the handbrake that the cable feeding that wheel didnt release as much as the l/h/s cable (could this be the problem?) I bought new handbrake cables to fit at the same time i did the drums and shoes but decided not to replace them, probably should have :( .
Anyway any advice would be appreciated. Tomorrow im going to slacken the handbrake off as far as it will go to see if that makes any difference (If i does then its obviously the cables) Any how please gtive your thoughts on this just incase what i propose to do doesnt work

they are a sort of ratchet type of adjuster (not the type i have normally seen) and i set them so the shoes didnt touch the drums when i refitted them(guess thats what you would call set back). I could also hear them adjusting themselves once i set them by pressing the brake pedal and thats when they started to bind on the r/h/s:confused:

i took the drum back off after roughly to days driving and the shoe that is connected to the handbrake is very worn at the top (these were new shoes fitted 2days ago). Also the pin that goes through that shoe with the spring washer on had fallen out sometime over the 2days since refitting them (dont suppose that helped any)..............however once id slackend the handbrake cables right off no more binding. I'll take it out for a run later and see how hot the drum gets................these are new drums and shoes.

Sounds like the fault is either poor fitting or the handbrake cable, did you deadjust the handbrake when you set up the footbrake?

sort of bodged a pin(getting new one next week) and no i didnt take the cap off - doh ! Quick question then, to make sure the pistons are pushed in do i have to remove the pads again and start from stratch ? Ive done brake shoes on cavalliers and corsa's and i have to say the punto is a real pain in the butt...... what do you mean did i "deadjust the handbrake when i set the footbrake" ?

thanks for that, thats why i didnt remove the hub as i didnt have a nut to replace it with, the pin bodge is as follows - bolt with double nut and locking compound (not totatly tight, about same play as other shoe) is that ok do you think

This is a common problem when non technical people replace brake shoes. The first thing that should be done when replacing rear shoes is to deadjust the hand brake, if you dont you can have a very low pedal due to the footbrake adjustment not being correct. Always deadjust the handbrake all the way off, fit new shoes, adjust up (personally I would manually adjust them), and then readjust the handbrake.
