Hi guys, I'm new to this forum.

I am Mario, from Macedonia. So, my dad owns a Punto mk1 SX 75 1.3 8v. It's a family car, but it's 20 years old. It has a lot of rust and holes underneath, if you're sitting in the left back seat and looking in the front seat holders, you can see the road. I have some photos, I think that they would help. So I need help, how can this be fixed? It also has a stratch on the right back side(caused of another car), So I'd want to get those things fixed but my dad doesn't want to spend too much money on it, because he thinks that fixing this car doesn't worth it (you can buy an used punto for about 600-700 euros). Any help would be apperciated.

I just uploaded a video of the holes underneath on YouTube, but I cant post it there because I still don't have enough posts on this forum.

Thanks,
Mario

had similar holes on my mk1, just not that big, shame i didnt take pictures before and after, a guy i know welded everything charged 60 eur, but your job could easily take like 200 eur or more if you take it to someone who you dont know
still dont see why rust underneath is mot fail, as it doesnt endanger anyone else than yourself, car still performs and drives exactly same

what about other side?

In Macedonia, there is no rust check when registering the car. But I really don't like it with those holes. My dad asked some local mechanics and they said about 150 euros, still not worth it, because in Macedonia, people only want money, nothing else. If we leave the car for fixing, it WILL be fixed, but it wont last long, the mechanic will just put some metals and it will look as fixed.

And about the other side, I have a video uploaded on YouTube, but I can't post URLs before I get 5 posts on this forum. I'll try send it via PM.

Thanks,
Mario

yea you got some big holes, but they will fail you here if you got only one little hole, which is absurd

I sent you the URL of the video in a PM, when I catch up 5 posts, I will put it in this thread, because before 5 posts I just can't post URLs. :)

That's not so bad. All you need to do is cut an inch wider than the hole to stop rust creeping further back. Make a plate half an inch wider than the hole and lap weld from inside first before lap welding from under the car.

Stripping the interior out will take longer than the job but it's worth doing right.

Actually, it is bad, I can't even lift the car up if I need to change a flat tire. I must find a place that's not rusted and put a piece of wood there, and then I can lift it up. Maybe I can lift it up on the recommended places but it's a 50:50 chance to ruin the chasis.. How much does it cost to buy a whole new chasis? And how much does it cost to give the car to a mechanic and weld the current one? I can't do that myself because I live in a flat and I can't do that in a shared parking..

Thanks,
Mario

EDIT: When I will get an opportunity to get the car lifted up I will take some pictures and a video maybe.

Rotten floor is no excuse for saying "I cannot lift the car" :). Simply buy trolley jack (20 €) and put it under the axle/wishbone

Will you carry that in your car with you everytime? What if I'm in a middle of a motorway and I need to lift the car? Just.. no.. :/

Bah! The thing is less than 15x15x50 cm and fits nicely right under the carpet at the rear end of the baggage compartment. I have been carrying it there ever since my late Uno begun to rot long, long years ago and simply transferred the habit to Punto, which does not really require this lifting solution yet.

you don't want to be driving your car on a motoway or anywhere until that rot is fixed:eek:

Actually.. I AM driving it..

That will fix the holes. But you need to find some strong places where you can weld it. And there are no strong places there. The whole underbody is lightly rotten, and it's soft, so you can't even lift the car. As I said, its a 50:50 chance to ruin the chasis. By the way, where are you from?

The point is to put the trolley jack under the rear AXLE or front WISHBONE and not under the rotten body itself. It is also much faster than using the mechanical jack provided with the car. Standard trolley jack from Lidl, Hornbach, Obi etc. will suffice and the investment will pay back big time in the long run. Bottle jack is smaller and cheaper, but, IIRC, it is too high to fit comfortably under the wishbone.
As you can see by the flag under my nick, I am from Czech Republic - not that it matters.

The lifting is not really a problem but I can't use the factory made places for lifting.. But how can I weld the holes? The whole underneath is rotten (not with holes, but it is just soft if you try to lift the car or weld there) so I can't find a strong place to weld..

Thanks,
Mario

its a death trap

It is, and what would I drive if I don't use my car? It just needs a lot of work and that would cost too much.. if you think that fixing this 20 y/o car, come to Macedonia, and fix it..

Thanks,
Mario
