Hi, i got a recall letter from fiat to day, they said that the brake pipes on mk1 puntos need extra corrosion protection, they say take my car to fiat garage and the letter, and they will fix any coroded pipes and spray them ( i presume with waxoil)for FREE.
If you didn,t get a letter contact last owner to see if they got it or contact fiat.

Wow, they still sending letters for this, I had mine done over a year ago.

Dave - ( i presume with waxoil ), you presume wrong, more like Hammerite! When they did mine they bent them so one touched the axle!

What year punto is it? or does this apply to all puntos mk1? Cos surely they change the way things are done so must have upgraded on later models?

The letter just says mk1 puntos they don't say what years are affected, mine is 97.

Mine were checked by the Local Fiat dealer back in June. They had the car all day then said they were fine and none needed replacing. They didn't apply anyting to them either, the pipes are still bare plated metal

The problem in my opinion affects more cars than those recalled. I had to change all the rear pipes on my 1999 85sx last year as these were well below the MOT standard, I did the work myself as all the pipes were seriously corroded in some areas.
The pipes have a thin plastic coating on mild steel and when salt and water get past this it can't escape and rust the pipe. Problem areas are generally where the pipes are bend down from fuel tank and at the wheel cylinder unions. I was so concerned at the state of these pipes (and their dealers)thatI e-mailed FIAT but the response was not very good.
I would advise all mark one owners to have their pipes checked as the quality of the pipe seems to vary even on one car ie one front to rear pipe on mine was very poor the other one was as new.
If anyone does have to replace a front to rear pipe themselves I am sure they will thank the engineer who thought clipping the main front to rear pipes to the top of the fuel tank was a good idea...yes they are clipped and yes to replace them yo do have to drop the tank...Thank you Fiat.
If you have a newish fiat and the pipes are ok wipe clean with a rag soaked in WD40 and coat with waxoyl that should help....

I took mine ('97 55s) to the local Fiat dealer and they quoted me most of the day to do it. I have little faith in them in any case. I went away and inspected them myself, every last inch of them. no corrosion at all, and then coated them myself with a black wax spray. This stuff drys firm and non sticky, and you can get it off if you need to. Paint of any sort, including hammerite, will still be like the coating mentioned previously and can trap water/salt. You can't see through it either! Cleaning that off to inspect the pipes is also a non starter. Check them thoroughly, or get them checked, and then coat with grease or wax. Then check them each year for your own peace of mind. My 2p worth!

If I was going that fast, it can't be my car officer!!

Had my recall letter over a month ago was told it was just for 96 models.
took it in 3 weeks ago and was told they needed replacing, still waiting to have them fixed.
At the time my car had a leak on the petrol filter and they didnt even spot it, good job i'd already ordered one.

I decided not to bother getting them to look as they said they wanted it for 4 hours to look then if anything was wrong I would have to take it back another day to get it fixed. and if they were only a bit coroded they said they would clean them up and treat them, they sounded like idiots to me. I've decided to check them my self, and if they are a bit coroded i will replace them with Non-fiat ones.

i bought my '96 mk 1 punto from salvage and repaired it myself,i tried contacting the previous owner on the log book but no joy. how would i go about having these type of checks done?... would you think fiat would have the reg and it would be on some type of computer if these checks have been carried out?

If u believe look 2 the dawn.. There can be only one true god

The Recall You are all on about is recall 4400 and concerns 4 pipes. The longituderal pipes only. No Others. It all mk1 puntos upto 1999. Is there rusty then replaced free of charge. If not (Unlikey) They are painted in special paint. or should beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!:)

I finaly got around to looking at mine today, they wern't rusty but are light gray ive only seen green and copper pipes before, so i don't know if they were replaced or just painted grey!
