But for all you know, this car has been used by the water all the time (etc).

Your car has spent most of it's life in Belgium!

That may not be possible to know unless you have owned the car throughout it's life. Plus, as above, you don't know how this car has been used and looked after, it makes a massive difference. A car kept on concrete for example could be fine after 8 years, a car kept on soft ground could rust within 4, it all depends.

Salt rusts cars.

Yes it would rust, just maybe not as much if you constantly removed the salt - which can come from rain, sea mist, wind etc.. To rust, all you need is iron (in steel), oxygen and water, it's the iron oxidising.

Salt speeds up the movement of the electrons hence speeds up the rusting if present.

what about if it was cleaned everyday, would that reduce rust? if so i might do that when i get my proper car :)

You would get bored.

By washing you would be providing it with water, a major help to rusting (!!!) and helping to remove thin layers of paint, by not washing, you would be leaving on deposits like salts which could help the rusting. I suppose there would be a point where it would become a bad idea to wash more than that. No idea where that point comes!

Best thing to do is wash it weekly and make sure any scratches etc. are treated promptly. IMO.

Agree with paul, no point in washing it every time it rains. What if it rained at night? :p It makes no sense...

A modern car should be able to withstand the rain here, the only ones that would suffer are imports from more arid countries, which are not made for our climate.

Once of the main reasons a modern car would rust is putting it in the garage after washing it or when it has rained. The water has little chance to evapourate. If the car is wet you are best-off leaving it outside.

Best bet is to wash the car regularly and rinse it thoroughly. I also give the underside of my cars a blast with the jetwash now and then, to shift all the mud and road salt that builds up. Mud is the worst thing in the world for cars as it traps moisture in places like the wheelarches.
