Punto (Mk1) My exploit yellow 75 elx

Introduction

Hi.
My name is Simon and I haven't been on here in ages.
I'm a fiat nut who has owned fiats all my life as have my family. I work in a fiat dealership in dundee and have treated myself to a new car, as it's the first time in my life I have been without a fiat.

I bought the following car off ebay for 4 reasons

1. I had one as my first car
2. I just bought a house and have somewhere to keep it
3. My mum had a brand new exploit yellow 55 sx back in '95
4. Have plenty fiat techs to fix it when it breaks

So, I'm in dundee, the car was in Yorkshire, so my dad and I left 5:30am Saturday morning in his 500L to pick it up. I was worried about bringing a near 20 year old fiat 260 mile up the road, but it didn't miss a beat. It drives like a new car.

History- we'll it was sold new to a mrs crappe, at carnell fiat, she had the car garaged from new, done 70,000 miles in it. It had its original dealer plates on it which I changed, as they were tatty. Full years mot with no advisories, and a full service history. She specced it up with a drivers airbag!

The car come with a few parking dings, original scuffed wheel trims, and a couple of light scratches, otherwise it's mint.
Luckily working in a fiat dealer, I can get parts, a workshop with a 40 years served fiat technician, a dent man and body shop.

Took the car into work today to get all the dents removed, was up on the ramps for a health check- solid underneath, just needs new discs and pads and a rocker cover gasket. Underneath is solid, clean and all present and correct. It also needs a new cam belt cover as mine is burst. Then that's it mint.
Turns out the rear tyres are the factory originals, made 3rd week of 1995, so it will be getting a full set of brand new Goodyear duragrips I have in my garage.
Surprisingly every single thing works on the car, even the remote locking and being an elx it has an electric sunroof!!!

It's quite funny because all the fiat techs were all over it today, donating parts. One of them had an exploit yellow touch up pen that's been in his toolbox for 15 years, got handbrake cables and a rocker cover gasket, with more bits offered. They also went on e-sigi and printed out the complete history of my car, showing recalls for brake pipes, airbag ecu etc which is nice to keep.

Work so far done-

New genuine wheel trims
New genuine punto mats
Original fiat tape deck
Genuine fiat lineaccessorie front and rear mudflaps
General tidy up
Clay, wet sand, machine polish bodywork
New numberplates
Dents removed
Brand new badges
Full valet

I love this car, I can't believe how mint it is. Taking bad with no power steering though.
I put it in the showroom and took some piccies.
Anyway the pictures.......

And my main/ daily car

image_zpsc9fa3907.jpg
My boot liner should be here tomorrow as dpd have screwed it’ll up.
Also picked up some fresh selenia oil and genuine filter from shop 4 parts for much cheapness for going back on the road.

Oh and I bought a new keyring, supposedly a fiat accessory.

Will spend a day fitting the new boot arms, oil and filter change etc before it goes back on the road

They only had the one boot liner [emoji849] but I’ll keep a lookout for one . I’ll be taxing the gt next month ready for the santa pod show , that’s if we don’t get snowed in again .

Postie has been- my boot liner and boot struts have arrived so spent a bit of time in the garage getting the car ready for going back on the road.

It’s nice having a boot that doesn’t clunk me in the head when it’s open, and was surprisingly easy to install.
Took the battery out, even though it’s been on a constant trickle charge all winter, it struggled to start so I took it out and am giving it a top up.
Maybe re tax it next week if the weather gets better.

Lovely fresh oil and filter for going back on the road. Car hasn’t done many miles since last service (probably around 100 or so) but managed to pickup the oil and filter for about £20 from shop 4 parts so for the sake of half an hour, I’ll just change it, as it’s been sitting about and will probably have condensation etc in the oil.

Also picked up a new keyring, listed as a genuine fiat accessory but there was no part number so unsure

Good value that Simon [emoji1303], I usually get mine from the dealer but it cheaper from there . I change the oil n filter on mine every year regardless of mileage .

Yeh I usually pick it up from work too but not any more.
I changed the plugs and air filter last year so it’s just an oil
Change it’s getting. Am going to renew the sump plug also.

All the snows gone now due to heavy rain but still
Loads of salt on the roads, so as soon as that’s gone it’s out

Slightly off topic but bought a 500 for my 2 year old.

She’s brainwashed already, tells me she wants to go out in daddy’s fiat 500 or his yellow punto car.

Can’t wait to see her face in the morning

Two bits of bad news-

Firstly, whilst looking for a Mk1 Punto breaking local to me, I come across my old mk2b in the scrappy’s for breaking.
https://www.u-pull-it.co.uk/breaker-parts/fiat-punto-2005/29739418-0

I am a bit upset, I bought the car brand new and had it for around 8 years, went through a few girlfriends with it, and loved that car, sold it when I bought my abarth. I get emotionally attached and found myself checking up on it every year at mot time. I sort of had a feeling it wasn’t good when it failed it’s mot in March.

Secondly, I gave the car it’s first wash of the year- I knew the rear drivers arch had a few bubbles on it but it’s getting worse- I’ll need to see to it before it becomes a major repair.

However, this is the first pic I have of both my beloved Fiat’s together and freshly detailed

I’m sure a good bodyshop would be able to do the repair , shame about the mk2 you can get attached to your old cars , I had a mk 2 escort years ago that I used to check up on after I sold it , I recently found a guy local to me still has it sadly I’d have to sell the gt and get a large loan to buy it back now [emoji30]

I was gutted when I checked up on my 1st car, and found it had been scrapped. I used to check on my parents old mk2, and was saddened when that died last year, taking 8.5 years of memories (September 2005-15 April 2014) to the scrapyard with it.

On a more positive note, my own mk2b is still very much plodding on: I saw it coming the other way whilst on my travels last month, and then saw it driving through my village the next day: I was absolutely over the moon!! :)

Just looked at the mk2b's fail points, nothing particularly scary there, some inner arch work and tidying of the subframe etc would have seen it on the road for years to come. Sadly just been thrown away the second someones seen the word "corrosion". :(
