Punto Mk1 Ignition key hole replacement

Hi,

I have a 1997 Punto Mk1 75 SX. Lately I am facing a problem which is whenever I put the key inside the ignition key hole, it seems the key hole is stuck, it is not rolling the key. Only after 4-5 attempts that I am able to turn on the ignition. Could you all kindly tell me what should I do? I have all the necessary keys with me, red, blue, brown...

I am from Finland. A mechanic here told me that there is a scrap yard here, I need to go there and they will fix it. I don't know how much will it cost. He said that if I go to the authorized dealer here it will cost me a big time. I hope my ecu is working fine. So should I need to change the whole package or just the ignition keyhole?

Could the experts here kindly help me and reply? Thanking you all in advance for your time and replies.

Regards,

D

Re: Punto Mk1 Ignition key hole replacement

Over here you can get graphite dust to blow into the lock. That may fix it.

Alternatively you need a key, barrel, and the matching code box. Without all 3 (and without all 3 being from the same car) you'll get nowhere.

An alternative is to get a lock and barrel. Get a blank key cut to match the new one (an uncoded one), carefully remove the chip from the old original key, stick it with epoxy to the new uncoded key.

Re: Punto Mk1 Ignition key hole replacement

Can I just check that the problem is not something simple like the steering wheel lock stopping the key turning. You can check this simply by wiggling the steering wheel as you turn the key to release pressure on the lock.

If you mean the usual steering lock, then no. Because I tried wiggling the wheel left and right still its the same. May be I am doing it in the wrong way.

Re: Punto Mk1 Ignition key hole replacement

I have another question. Is the ECU of Punto Mk1 75 SX the same as Punto 55? I got reply from a seller here in Finland who has scrapped his punto mk1 55. I am posting here what he has replied to my email.
"Hi, I didn't mean the remote lock.
I talked about a chip in the ignition key. There's some kind of reader in the ignition key barrel which is connected to ECU. So if someone tries to steal the car, it won't start.
First I replied that my demolished Puntos didn't have that equipment, but it was my mistake. I checked the ignition key barrel again and I think it does have that system.
By the way, my Punto was equipped with a 1,1 engine so it's Punto 55 model. I'm not sure if the ECU is same in the 75 model. So can you send me some numbers from your ECU?

If the parts are right for your car, ignition key and the key barrel cost 25 euros. ECU's price is 50e so total price is 75e."

Could the experts tell if this is okay, if the price is reasonable?

Kindly reply.

I have a friend here who is from UK. On my request he searched some online shops in UK and found that one can buy whole set ranging from 35-60 depending upon the age.

The ECU is different (check with ePER). but my best guess is that the code box and the lock are the same.

Re: Punto Mk1 Ignition key hole replacement

Hi,

Thank you all for your support. I searched ebay UK and found these sellers "http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ignition-Lock-Barrel-FIAT-BRAVO-BRAVA-BARCHETTA-SEICENTO-MAREA-PUNTO-MK1-NEW-/111092491270?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM& hash=item19dda0e406" and " http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-BRAVO-BRAVA-BARCHETTA-SEICENTO-MAREA-PUNTO-1-MK1-Ignition-Lock-Barrel-NEW-/271533542042?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM& hash=item3f38a90a9a".

When I contacted them they are saying that I don't need ECU or code box and that the only thing I need to do is to have the new un-coded key and my old coded key in the same key ring. Then I need to start the car using un-coded new key. He said that it will automatically recognize the code from the old key.

Could the experts here kindly tell me if this is true or just trying sell what they have?

Thanking all in advance for your replies.

I think he's been drinking reindeer urine.

Can't see any way that the code could magically jump from one chip to another!

Still, if it doesn't work, you can just transfer the chip over. (And ask Kimmi to punch him in the face, or Mika to run him over).

Quite funny. Hey fingers99 I got this reply fromFranco Roselli MD of ricambio.
Hi Deepak

The Ignition Switch and Keys we supply are not the chipped type so will not start the car, however if you keep your existing key on the same keyring the chip in it will work to immobilise the car and you can use it no problem. You can only
do it this way by using the old key, otherwise you need to buy a lockset and CODE ECU which becomes expensive. Hope this all makes sense.

What do you say? I am confused very much.

One important question " Is the ECU and code box of Punto 55 1.1 the same as1.2 75 SX?

Re: Punto Mk1 Ignition key hole replacement

The ECU is certainly different. But the code box may well be the same.

Franco is right -- but you can (for ease, rather than anything else) take the chip out of the old key (it's a glass tube, about 8mm x 3mm) and transfer it to the new key.

Thank you for the reply. So I just buy a new barrel and associated key and install it. Then I need to put the old key(with the chip) in the same ring as new key. Am I right? Then I don't need a new ecu and code box as per Franco!!
