plz help. oil leaking

Hi I have recently purchased a t reg mk 1 punto 1.2. When I bought the car I saw oil on front of block so assumed rocker cover gasket was leaking.

I serviced the car and replaced rocker cover. After driving for 10mins I could oil dripping from the car. It was fresh oil judging by the colour.

I took it to a garage who diagnosed it that the cam shaft seal had gone. They replaced that and timing belt today but car is still leaking. I can see the oil come from the timing belt cover. I just dont know what to do.

Plz help

Re: plz help. oil leaking

As you replaced the rocker cover gasket and camshaft seal, then the only place of leak near the cambelt cover could be the crankshaft oil seal at the bottom. I would also check the sump seal as well.

Re: plz help. oil leaking

First off, welcome to FF

When you say 1.2, which 1.2 do you mean?
- 1.2 8v spi (single point injection) engine, i.e. Punto60
- 1.2 8v mpi (multi point injection) engine, i.e. Punto75
- 1.2 16v mpi engine, i.e. Punto85 / Sporting

I'm gonna assume its an 8v from what you have said so far. I would suggest you clean up the oil as best as you can, apply small amount of talc around the general area oil appears to come from and run the engine for a short while - you should be able to tell pretty easily then where the oil is coming from - leave the cambelt cover off so you can see

Yep, check very carefully where it's coming from . Clean, use talk, assume nothing.

Do check that the camcover oil breather isn't blocked -- that will cause backpressure which will always tend to cause leaks.

also the rocker covers are really commonly over tightened, should be 8Nm iirc which is a little over finger tight. Small smear of instant gasket in the corners helps to seal properly too.

Re: plz help. oil leaking

Hi

The sump gasket is fine. When car is runnjng I can see fresh oil drip from between where the cam cover and engine block meet. I spoke yo the garage who also said that some had used sealer around cam shaft seal which he removed and fitted a proper cam shaft seal. He did also mention that the seal fitted on too easily so also suspects worn cam.

The car is sapping vital funds.

I think the car is team 60 if that helps.

well take the cam cover back off - its only 4 screws.
-Make sure the mating surfaces are properly clean
-Put a small smear of sealant around the head
-Put the rubber seal on the head
-Put a small smear around the cam cover itself
-Replace cover and screw back on, not too tight as i said before!

Use appropriate sealant, i recommend Locktite 5910 Black Gasket Sealer.

u should recommend to change camshaft oil seal aswell, as its probably leaking too, or else he will have to open it again

Re: plz help. oil leaking

erm no, disagree. I already suggested the OP properly clean the area and be sure where oil is coming from.
If it is from the cam cover only then my advice is just leave the camshaft seals well alone, if they start leaking in the future change them then, as is the cover seal is 15min job doable by anybody. Camshaft, although not hugely difficult is a bit more involved and no point touching it if its not leaking. Its only a minute or twos work to take the cam cover back off again if it need doing in future so no biggy.
