Hi guys and girls i have a 1997 Fiat Punto GT with Abarth options (45000 miles and actually mint!) and i am in the process of doing the 2.0 coupe transplant but i need your help/advise! I need any advise on it or help you can give on things like mounts/wiring/problems etc

**I also need a set of Brembo Brake Caliper Adapter brackets** (money waiting)

Any help would be massively appreciated!!

Hi,

No offence, but, if it is mint, why hack it up? IMHO you'd be better off getting one that needs work, and keeping the minter as an investment.

Without sounding like a negative idiot, I really wouldn't do it. Have seen really nice cars get hacked up, rarely run right and not run reliable power - to do this job properly budget 5K minimum.

There were a couple of similar projects over on the punto sports club but one was eventually broken due to engine faliure and the other was a beautiful 1.4 and imo does not look anywhere near as good now it has been morphed into a 2.0 and has had issue after issue.

Seriously if you want a 250bhp+ hatch - buy a pulsar or similar.

If you are mad enough to go ahead with this project then bargain on :

Custom engine mounts
Custom loom (mashed coupe/gt loom will do)
Coupe uncoded ECU or stand alone management
Custom Water/Intercooler Piping
Large FMIC
Alloy Rad preferable
Larger Wheels (16"+)
Coilovers with a higher loading to handle the extra weight of the engine
Brembo Coupe Brakes

and that is before you even touch the engine itself. If I were going to that much effort I would have a rebuilt block and head waiting as the last thing to do is fit a second hand unit and then for it to go KAboom very quickly.

Just my personal opinion but if I had a mint standard car I would keep it that way and buy a cheaper one to hack up and convert!

Good luck whatever your decision.

Thanks for all the responses guys! unfortunately at thispoint the coupe has been fully stripped engine out, clutch done etc etc theengine is literally sat in front of the GT which also has 0 engine in its bayanymore And im after advise from those who have actually made the ambitiouschoice to do this conversion, its my first engine conversion so slightly new towhat needs doing im at the stage of what you said J.R Racing,

Custom engine mounts
Custom loom
Coupe uncoded ECU
Brembo Coupe Brakes
(which i hope im getting custom brackets for)

Then yes,the problems with cooling wiring locations engine compant locations etc etctrust me no one said this was easy!! If it was it would be common, the thing isim not well payed at the moment however i do have money set out for theproject, the 1.4 that was in there was an absolute dog of an engine ever whohad it before totally ragged the s*it out of it or something, i was given thecar as a gift all was well until 1 week later, turbo goes bang.. bye bye cartill i fork out the new turbo cost, then all the boost pipes and engine issoaked i mean soaked in oil, the firetrap was BACKWARDS so it was actuallydamaging the turbo rather than helping it, and recently ive noticed its had afront end as the front crossmember is actually red underneath the blue paint, anyway after all the engine trouble “fixed” a month later.. BANG oh great headgaskets just gone then car by this point was p*ssing me right off yes it wasfun having red light races with porsches and gettin looks from the noise of thedump valve but i had enough with this engine so ive always wanted to do aconversion so here i am, hoping to have a 2.0 16vT Fiat punto GT! So anyonethat can help with ANY PART of this conversion then please do not hesitate tolet me know, or if you know anyone that can help or give advise, i know a fewpeople have done them so if you can help please do, im new to the forum so notsure where/who these guys are..

Once againthanks guys!

Forgot to say Im working on the gear linkages aswell (oh the joy of working off a blurry picture)

In all honesty it's not really worth it tbh, handling will be seriously affected!! A lot of weigh up front, keep it to a 1.4 and tune it to 250 bhp it's not massively hard to get to, but I understand about problems with the gt can't tell you how many times I've rebuilt mine :S so I bought a 500 abarth the weekend lol also there's less then 200 gts on the road don't wreck it :)
