Hi

I have a Punto 75 ELX and for the past week it has been very difficult to push the clutch pedal to the floor. At about half way down, there is a clicking/scratching noise that appears to come from the clutch itself. (possibly a spring?) I have checked the slave cylinder and that's ok.
I have actually used WD40 on the lever that releases the clutch (the bit that the slave cylinder pushes) and the problem disappears for a day or so.
Is this just a lubrication problem, or is the clutch on its way out?

Any advice would be great ..

Léon

P.S. If it is the clutch - what's the average price I should be paying?

I have the same problem with my mk1 punto sporting, it does sound like a spring, cant figure out the bitchin problem either. have a similar noise when i move the gear lever left-right when it's in neutral.
New clutch is max £80 plus labour of about £50-100 depending on where u go.
peace.

My clutch went like that, a week later I started it after work and couldn't select any gears... The clutch was f**ked!

I paid £240 @ Mr Clutch to bet a Borg Warner fitted, it was only £50 more than a standard clutch and worth every penny.

PS My car 1996 1.6 Punto Sporting

look out for those 1.6 sportings mk 1 clutches, as mine did the exact same thing as dickies

pain in the arse

i got my clutch for £180 so depends where u go

I have read on this group some who have said they have replaced the clutch only to find out it was the slave cylinder that was clicking! - anyway you have tried that and found your clutch slave cylinder to be OK so then it must point to the clutch then I suppose. Just out of curiosity how do you check a clutch slave cylinder? - do you have to take it off the engine?

Cheers,

Andy.

I have a 1.1 55s punto and my clutch was making the same noises and was really hard to get into gear. i had to replace my clutch cost me £240 for a standard clutch to be fitted.

Hi Leon,
Had the same problem with the clutch , 1.2 8V 2001 42000mi.
WD40 on the release arm seemed to make a huge improvement and I was considering not replacing the clutch but there was still a faint whirring noise from the bellhousing area. Anyway common sense prevailed and when the old parts came out I was amazed the car was still running so bad was the damage to the pressure plate springs and the release bearing.
My tuppenceworth is fit a new clutch kit before the whole thing goes to flitters and costs an arm and a leg to sort.

Safe motoring (y)
