General Tinting Rear Lights.

This is the level of tint I'm happy with and it does NOT darken the actual light source.

This is my old light which cracked and so used it for this test.

I thought this forum was all about giving advice on a specified question, not telling people how to live their lives....

Light tinting is NOT illegal if basic common sense is applied, yet just because he chooses to modify his car in this way you all come down on him like a ton of bricks.

It is such a hypocritical view anyway - there is nothing legal about speeding yet I guarantee you all will have broken a speed limit at some point, the risks are as punishable and in certain circumstances have worse end results...........

Ohh you have found the dislike button (y)

You will find that we try exercise a duty of care to our members. Along with trying to educate them if we can to try to prevent them from running foul of the law, Injuring themselves or others, Or becoming another statistic of road accident data....

The forum also doesn't condone speeding or any other Illegal acts, We have an image to maintain and if that puts a few noses out of joint as people don't like been told the truth and prefer to stay in some form utopia that is up to them....

After all there are enough wrecks on the road with defects just stand in the MOT testing station for a few hours and see how many actually pass......

alright calm it down peeps. No tints aren't illegal, not having any reflectors is so either leave a bit untinted or stick some other reflector on the back.

Not telling your insurance company about anything is stupid, period.

I have had tinted rear lights, made no difference to insurance at all. If you want to tint your lights fine, just notify your insurance if you make changes to your car as they will try and wriggle out of any claim, thats is their business and how they make money so don't give them ways of invalidating your insurance.

As J.R. said spray on in thin layers to extremely clean lights and leave to cure in warm place for couple of days - they will have a matt finish until you polish them back, i find the best results are made from going a tad darker than you want them and then t-cutting back til they are the shade you want.

Hi blu73,
Thanks for your imput, I thought that some tints are NOT illegal, and my insurance is due a renewal in March, so I might as well inform them then :)
As for the procedure, I've put on 1 layer, let it dry for around a day and I'm jut waiting on some cash so I can get the polish (y)
Thank you so much again for your advice and help, all is appreciated :D

Build the layers up very thin light coats almost dusting them on (eg very lightly) rub down with p3000 grit and soapy water and wipe over with panel wipe (napthia) between coats DO NOT USE THINNERS it will melt/ soften the plastic in some cases

Once your happy lightly rub with p3000 or even better p5000 grit then refine with a rubbing compound then a finishing polish to bring up the shine and gloss

You could add a layer of 1k clear coat over the top to add to the gloss and resist scratches and peeling (y)

That's great stuff mate! :)
One quick question though, do you know where it would be cheapest, for example eBay, Wickes, etc?
Thanks a lot mate! :D

i just was gonna say that i once when i was young tinted my rear lights and made them too dark and got pulled for it
if you look on your punto tail light you will see on the outside that were the bulbs are there are small round circles with a cross on it in each light department
that is were the middle of bulb is
i took them as reference, got some black sticky adhesive and made round stickers to fit on those marks problably about 3 to 4 cm wide and stuck them on
got some light tint and sprayed light with stickers on
after when dry carefully took the round stickers off and got myself a pair of perfectly legal lights with same output of light as standard
they looked very nice too and had people commenting on them and asking me were i bought them from!
unfortunately no pics of them as when i did this job on my tipo there was no iphones about i had a nokia 3310!!!
