Thanks guys... so next plan of action:

I'll try with a new air temp sensor anyway... also i ve had the sparks plug out just yesterday and they were black... but dry. so cleaned 'em up and refitted them while waiting for a new set to arrive.

I'll start the car without the airbox and have a look whats happening there...i.e. leakage... and that as far as it goes... if all this don't help shortly there will be a punto for sale.

Yet another update:

changed the air temp sensor and as soon as i ve done it... car started and the unburnt fuel smell were slowly disappearing.
This morning went to the car tried to start her up... nothing...:bang: battery was getting flatter by the second.(n)
Charged the battery up... still nothing... :bang: puzzled, never had problem starting...

So one of you guys said to take air filter off and look at TB... all i get is a puff of white smoke, smelling of fuel...

Any help on this one please?

It looks like you have disturbed something while replacing the sensor and the electrics are playing up. You need to see if all wiring is still in place and trace back your steps. On the plus side it may be that you found the overfueling problem sorted!!! Or is it the unintended mode you just made to your car? It looks like you need hope as it stands your car is not running. Hopefully you have not fried your edu?? which could be the cause of the battery drain. Can't see you upset the timing while changing the sensor though.

I am not going to get defeated as I am just as fiery and as bad temper as the punto... well with both of us being Italian...:)

So having another tinker about, i ve concluded that the possible non starting issue is due to a faulty(or electrically faulty) injector, or injection relay.
So out with multimeter is my next stage.
What sort of reading can i expect on the injector itself and on the relay?

Should the injector being the faulty part can i change just that or do i have to change the top part of TB?

Thanks again for all your help... what a learning curve this is proving to be...

Not sure that a multimeter can catch the pulses -- generally, if when the engine is cranked, you can see fuel just dribbling onto the butterfly (air filter gubbins out of the way) the injector will be fine.

A google should throw up tests for injectors.

There is no injector relay.

Alternatively, if it fires up when cranked and you dribble a little fuel down the TB, it's the fuel system (but unlikely to be the injector).

Check the timing!

As the injector was sort of working prior to messing up with the air temperature meter, is quite possible that you messed up the wiring (of the injector in particular) and now stopped working. I'll check all electrical connection in the area of your last fix attempt first. And to keep fingers happy just check to see if your timing belt is still there.

By all means, but keep it simple.

To run, an engine needs fuel, spark and compression, all at the right time.

Check for fuel (and the operation of the injector) by simply looking down the throttle body while cranking the engine.

If no fuel, by all means, start looking for a wiring fault (there are two wires going to the injector, if one earths out you'll get overfuelling, if the other, you'll have no fuel -- and probably a blown fuse). Clumsy re-fitting can cause the wires to be trapped and short out. BUT check for spark first. If no fuel and no spark, 95%+ it'll be the TDC sensor at fault.

Assuming fuel and spark and heavy fuel consumption, Blu's point about the timing being out is a good one. But the later symptom, white smoke out through the TB, suggests (especially if accompanied by a pop) that the timing has slipped further or the belt has snapped. Whip off that cover and check.

Injectors, per se, are absurdly reliable. When dirty they tend to stick open, rather than closed. They (or it, in this case) would be the last place I'd look. A bit like finding a virgin at one of Berlusconi's parties.

Final Update

The damn car has finally fired up again...

Timing is fine and so is the injector and connected wiring...
So changed lambda, coolant temp, and air temp sensors...

Now the car fires up all the time and the rich mixture smell is disappearing... so tomorrow will get a few miles out to check consumptions.
I want to thank all of you for your help.

Oh almost forgot... the car was not starting thanks to some fouled spark plugs...
cleaned 'em up(new ones been ordered) and hey presto the damn thing sprung to life...
