i'v got the plans to buy a punto, but there are a lot of series, like: 50 s or 60 s or 75 sx etc. wat does this typical number say, for me the cars are all the same... and what do you advice me to buy? i can afford a car from up to the year 1996. I need a reliable car.

The numbers relate to the bhp of the car. So a 55 is 55bhp and so on and so on....... ;o)
As for reliabilty, well mine has always been reliale, apart from the odd probs, but that is typical of any car in my opinion.

I hate to say it but if your main criteria is for a reliable car then some would say a punto is not the obvious choice.... but that's being a bit harsh you could do a lot worse.

As 16v says the number is the hp of the car. Puntos start at 55, which is a 1.1, and go to 90 or 85, which is a 1.6 or 1.2 16v respectively. On top of that there is the GT, which is a 1.4 Turbo somewhere about 120 or 130 bhp I think.

The letter is the interior/exterior trim. S is the basic no frills, then SX gives you extra bits. Then there is the ELX and HLX which will have various toys like probably fog lights etc.

For the versions and engine sizes, a good place to see is www.carsfromitaly.com. More info on what specific trim levels inculdes try www.parkers.co.uk.

other way around for mk1s sx is fogs n electric windows elx is poor mans sporting nicer seats, door speakers, center console, rear head rests n stuff

Ah, Always get them messed up, it's all a bit overcomplicated really it seems to me!

The new system is no better though with active, dynamic, active plus, active sport and all that tosh what a mess...!

Hate to be a party-pooper, but the ELX is a higher spec than the SX. Always was.

The S has:
Seats...
...er...
...um...
tinted windows
4 speaker stereo
Folding rear seat

The SX added to this with:
Front fogs (the ELX did have these)
Electric windows
Central locking
Height adjustable drivers seat
Height adjustable wheel
60/ 40 split rear seat on pre-facelift models
6 speaker stereo

The ELX had, in addition to everything on the SX/ ELX above:
'One shot' operation of windows
Remote locking
Body colour bumpers (the SX got this in the 1997 facelift)
Nicer interior trim (subjective, I know)
Rear headrests
Electric sunroof (the 75SX/ TDSX had a manual sunroof, the 55SX didn't have one)
Drivers airbag (from 1995 onwards)

Dave, you might be thinking of the 6-speed '55 EL' which had all of the SX stuff without central locking or electric windows, but did have body colour bumpers.

I know my specifications I do. I used to read brochures all the time

With the Mk2, the 1.2/ 1.9D was a replacement for the 'S', the ELX was a replacement for the 'SX' and the HLX was a replacement for the 'ELX' (sort of, anyway as all the specifications increased...)

I got a punto 55 just to use through the winter & its a great car, never let me down & insurance is peanuts as its only a 1100 cc.OK not exactly a mean machine & its basic but reliabilty was my main reason for getting it.Going to keep it now (y)

Bad point......tiny washer bottle filling hole

i have an elx in the garden it no got 'One shot' operation of windows

Perhaps it was later in the model age (16v model?) or perhaps I dreamed it!

Dave, its the way it reads on the comments on ELX being one-up from the SX, apologies if I misunderstood (y)

hmmm.

Perhaps I am confusing the fact the SX got a 'CD compatable' stereo as did the ELX, so I'm thinking it was the same unit (where as the unit in the S was not CD compatable), perhaps it was just the different number of speakers with the same head unit.

Still, I can be wrong. I'm only human and I am trying to recollect a brochure I last read about 7 years ago :p

I remember going-out in a 75 ELX when the Punto first came out (April 1994) and being struck by what a brilliant car it was. Mk1 still is; much nicer than the Mk2.

Like I said, what a messy system! I swear I've seen an ELX without fogs, but maybe not! Crazy.

like I said, I'm pretty sure I've seen ELX without fogs.

You know the fogs aren't seperate they're in with the main lights (on the edges) Puntolass?

I was just refering to Mk1 Puntos.

Mk2 ELX versions don't have fogs as standard (they are on the HLX, Sporting and HGT, along with the newer Active Sport, Dynamic, Eleganza). They are the bulb on the outside (i.e. next to the wing) in the front light housings. If there are no fogs fitted, this is just a silver plastic fill-in panel.

If you have the button (on the centre console and next to the rear fog light button) then it has been fitted as an option (it was about £100), if not then the car does not have fogs.
