Hi all, I have just filled up the Punto, waited until the pump clicked off, pressed it again, then it clicked off again, got back in the car and the needle wasn't at the top of the gauge. Its done this a few times, but as soon as I have set off, the needle moves all the way to the top, however this time it didn't. The fuel pump was only replaced about a month ago.
Would it be something causing the pump to click off early (I've used the exact same pump before and never had a problem) or a faulty sender unit. (Am I right in thinking this is inside the pump?)

The car has been stored for a while (about 6 months) without being moved. The exhaust had completely rusted through (it was stored inside) and the alternator seized so it wouldn't surprise we if something else had gone as well!

Thanks:)

was the fuel gauge sensor plugged into the pump fully?
i think im reading this wrong,do you mean the fuel pump switch is clicking off?
if yes then its due to a faulty pump or high resistance in the wiring/earth

No sorry should have put it clearer, I've just filled up,the petrol pump clicked off (so you would think the tank would be full) however the needle is not at the top of the fuel gauge. (between full and 3/4)
Ill check the wiring on the pump in the morning

Thanks

hi
i didnt mean the wiring i meant the sender clips onto the fuel pump and it can unclip and give erratic readings
to be fair ive not noticed this on puntos but it was a problem on corsas when i repaired them

I'd really not worry about it. If it's the "inside a tube" type sender, they can stick. But yours isn't sticking excessively, and probably never will. You could try pulling it apart and cleaning it, but there's not a lot you can do. But checking and cleaning the connectors (a smear of vaseline or silicone grease will keep them electrically sound) can do no harm at all.

Otherwise, just treat it as one of those little quirks old cars pick up.
