Technical posh petrol killed my car :(

Thought i try car up on wednesday just to see if it would start... and for some strange reason it did

Took it to the garage for them to look at and they said the following is wrong and fixed them;

  • Cam Shaft oil seal
  • Aux belt guide needs replacing
  • Aux belt replacing
They re timed the engine did a compression test all is good.

Got the car back and its still not right :/
When im pulling off from stand still the car loses all power and stalls.
Whilst driving the engine cut out mabe 3-4 times on a 3mile drive. :bang:

Anyone any ideas? Should i get the ECU looked at?

None of them would affect the general running.

Have you spoke to the fuel garage you used about the possibility of dodgy fuel, like I said?

It's very rare for a coil to break down, it does happen but mostly this is due to cracks in the casing and weather getting in. Usually their replacement is unwarranted.

Remove your spark plugs one at a time, with the HT lead connected to the plug and coil as per normal, use a pair of pliers to hold the metal body of the spark plug against the engine block, crank the engine and look for a spark.

Alternatively you can buy HT test leads which light up, so you can plug those on the plug, leave the plug in situ and crank the engine with your arm through the window.

Do the ohms test on the coil. Swap the coils around if they pass the ohms.

just been into the car to plug my diagnostic reader in.

Coming up with codes

  • U1600
  • U1700
  • U1702
  • P1654
When i turned the ignition on, the petrol gauge went from half a tank to the bottom and the petrol light started flashing.
Tried to start the car and it wont start :/

This is making me more think its the ECU which is knackered. If i bought those cables and ran FIAT ECU scan on it, would that help with diagnostic any more ?

erm

there's one on the passenger side by the fuel cut off Switch
One in the Boot
One in the Driver foot well between the center column
Two in the engine bay, follow the negative lead from the battery, and the gearbox one

and there is definitely more :(

Quick google and they all seem to be voltage related....

Check the earths in the engine bay do a resistance check of the main lead between the battery and the engine block and chassis clean them all up

this is for a grande punto but should give you an idea of where to look...

checked out the earths i could find and they all look ok..
I managed to get the car started and was driving it about.

It is still cutting out but only cuts out when i am approaching to stop or put my foot on the clutch to change into a lower gear.

when the engine has gone off i can keep it in second and 'roll start' the car 8/10 times starts up again and i can carry on driving.

This sounding more like a loose connection or a sensor ?
Or could this not be timed right ?

Sounds more like a basic idle learn issue. Have you tried resetting the self-adaptives or doing the throttle body learn process?

Is there no option in FES?

Failing that, the old trick of switching on the ignition for 1 minute, then off for 1 minute, then starting the car and leaving to warm up tends to work well.

Wouldn't cure the fuel pump intermittantly not working though. Have you got an aftermarket alarm/immobiliser? Doesn't make sense that you'd need to lock and unlock before it will work- the stock immobiliser/alarm doesn't work that way... unless there's some weird Body computer issue.

I havent got the cables for ECU scan :(
Im not too sure if i have to lock and unlock the car i just do it because i think thats what fixes it lol...

Sadly, looking at the earths (or even using a meter on them, if the fault is intermittent) usually gets you nowhere.

You have to physically undo them, scratch them clean, coat with silicon grease or vaseline and re-attach.

But, a good test for an issue with one of the main engine earths is to use a single jump lead between the battery negative terminal and a solid (and well connected) metal part of the engine or gearbox.

Its looking like it will start up now... only problem im having is when the revs drop it just cuts out
