Hey Guys

Got a Fiat Punto 60 SX 1998, only done 70,000 miles just passed its MOT 2 days ago and today it's starting doing a metallic scraping/grinding noise in gears 1-4 and neutral at about 2.5k rpm.

When revving in neutral it sounds pretty constant after about 3k rpm but when driving around normally it comes and goes, no loss of power to the car or problems with temps.

We haven't noticed the grinding in 5th but I think that's because since hearing the noise we haven't been revving high enough in that gear when driving about.

I've been told it could be a gearbox/diff bearing I'm wondering if anyone can shed any light on it before I take it to a garage so I have some sort of expectation how much it will cost to fix.

EDIT: I've uploaded an mp3 of the noise if this helps you guys (and helps anyone else with the problem in future) http://www.ds22.co.uk/EngineGrindNoise.mp3

Cheers

Re: Punto mk1 problem with electronics

Firstly is it doing it when your not driveing? If so id put the clutch in and rev it that wud rule out the gear box, mite be an idea to also check belts and tensioner.

Will try when possible and let you know. Thanks for all suggestions so far.

I've just had my gear box done as it made a grinding sound in 1,2 and reverse apparntly they all use the same bearing... To have a reconditioned box in and fitted by a garage i know (mates rates) cost £350 when i was getting quoted your talking 400-500 pounds.

Could be any of those (except clutch is usually quiet in neutral), but first check the exhaust pipe is not rubbing. The MOT tester will have waggled it about to check its secure. That may have dislodged a mounting rubber. The middle mount and and over the back axle are common areas for exhaust to rub.

A propos the exhaust -- the front hanger, just by the flexi pipe -- has a habit of breaking its weld on Mk1s. It's relatively simple to weld back into place.

But a good, long listen with a stethescope should point you in the right direction if it isn't this. Around a tenner from any decent factor, and lots of fun for playing doctors and nurses.

Going to get someone who knows their way around cars better than I do to take a look and will let you know thanks for the suggestions.

There was water dripping under the car yesterday after I noticed and thought it could be the pump, but there was also a crack in wiper valve so put it down to that.

Noise sounds like it's coming from the front center left when driving. I went over some dodgy speed bumps in my estate so wondering if somethings got knocked.

Grinding noise a lot worse this afternoon, took it to a garage who gave it a drive (could hear the noise from in the offices there) and said it sounds like gearbox, which is around £400 for them with labor, they reckon its not very safe to drive at the moment.

Will keep you updated.

watch they isnt missdiagnosing
can you get another opinion whilst saying nowt?
im just ultra careful with people who take money in these recessionary times

Well, a little under 2 months on, had the gearbox looked at and no problems besides a slightly worn bearing, it randomly stopped making the noise altogether and we put it down to a bit of wear or some crap in there that had made its way through. It would VERY occasionally drop out of fifth but no issues otherwise.

Today I did a decent 100 mile run in it and lost 5th gear about half way home, had to do the rest in 4th, when shifting down to third when entering town and leaving the dual carriageway the gearbox just totally went.

Hopefully it's just the gearbox that's needs replacing, I found out when I bought it the car had a new clutch but didn't have any of the bearings changed which apparently is supposed to happen with a new clutch. Fingers crossed I can find a decent gearbox but thought I'd just update this thread with the end of the story! Thanks again everyone for all your posts.
