General my car has stopped working

Hi all my partner ran the petrol empty on my punto and now it wont start. can anyone please help? it is a fiat punto 75, 1.2 8v

Change the fuel filter -- it's probably never been changed and is now full of carp.

Before start with demontage the fuel pump and fuel filter, I suggest you to fill up some 10 liters of V-power 100 gasoline, just to try to dissolve impurities on filter by additives contained in this quality gasoline type. Thats mean that you could not to clean fuel filter by openning fuel tank. This type of gasoline contain some additives ready to dissolve such type of impurities onto fuel system and I think it worth to try.
Original fabric fuel filter is mounted into the fuel tank, on fuel pump income pipe, and it is not so easy to reach and take out the fuel pump without special tool for plastic ring keep the pump into fuel tank. Gasket is gentle too. Of course, electrical contact and battery mast be disconected before any operation or touch of fuel pump and his contacts, because sparking could produce explosion of gases........If you do not sure to be able to do this job, its better to try with some type of special additives, or leave professionals to do this job for you.....
If your Punto have some aftermarket fuel filter (ussualy somwhere under bonnet) you should try to change this, but I think problem is in fuel tank and impurities picked up by original filter on fuel pump, during runout of petrol.
