Replacing springs and shock absorbers on 1997 Mk 1 with new.
I cannot work out the orientation of the shock absorber support bush; this is part no 7775940 on eper and is the bit with the locating pegs that bolts to the underside of the wing and has a single bolt holding the shock absorber and spring. This bolt is offset in the support bush so the front/back orientation is critical as it will alter the castor angle. Haynes on page 10.5 refers to diagram 3.15 re markings on the bush and also only refers to the left hand one; mine are new and I can see no markings on these or the old ones; unfortunately didn't note the orientation before removal (schoolboy howler)
any advice would be much appreciated

I've done mine a few times as I was experimenting with springs and I don't think it matters. I think the support bush is symmetrical. If not then the whole in the body and the fixing nuts will also not be symmetrical. In which case the mount will only fit one way. I would not worry.

thanks for reply; the fixings for the mount to the inner wing are indeed symmetrical but the hole where the bolt of the shock absorber goes through is offset fore & aft by an inch so depending on which way round it is fitted it will alter the castor angle; according to Haynes the 2 settings depend on whether the car has manual or power steering; if the castor angle is increased this will make the steering heavier and reduce steering feedback but will increase the tendency for steering to return to centre so presumably the lower castor angle setting is for manual....

Good point I need to check how I put mine in as it seems it is easy to make a mistake as the mounts can be install in either way without issues.

dumbledore is your Punto manual or PAS?
I presume having the bolt further aft increases the castor angle and vice-versa; probably the most important thing is that they are the same on each side....
