Technical Gear box oil

Technical Gear box oil

With the car on a level surface you just pump the stuff in until it overflows IIRC.

Since mk1 and mk2 Box'a are identical
There is about 1.4L of Oil in there

But Ffoxy is right - once drained - open the filler hole - and keep going till the oil starts coming out :)

Once its there - Quickly Stick the Bung in it :)

I cheated and got to the Fill Level - then go the car on a Hill - opened up the hole again - and added about 100ml extra :)

extra Oil wont hurt - just cause a lil drag if any drag at all to be honest

I'll have a go on my MK2 then. It's sometimes a bit hard to engage gears, especially first and second gear.

Could be a Problem with the Syncro Hub that select's first and 2nd then
But thats when it gets expensive

But yes it could be due to drying /Old oil

IIRC its 75/80W Oil for the mk2
You'll need 2x 1L bottles, i paid like £7 ea from a Local Auto Shop

IIRC its 8mm Hex for the Drain plug - Will Need an Old pan/Bowl/Bucket that Will be Useless afterwards

and a 12mm (same as oil Sump plug) for the Fill Hole

The drain hole is on the back of the box (facing the Bulkhead) its on the passenger side, and is usually covered in Yuck and Crap!
Crack that off - drain oil (leave for 10 to 15Mins)
Clean the Drain Bung up - as its magnetic it'll have fine Particles over it
When its clean - Replace the Bung
Crack off the Gearbox fill Hole (clean bung again)
Insert a Hose and funnel - of if you have a Spout bottle - place in the Hole and keep filling till it starts to over-flow - Wack a little bit more in - Quickly remove the Filling Pipe - Slap Bung back in

If the Oil that comes out is golden - its was technically fine
but if it was Black / Brown it was ready for a change
when my diff popped it was Black

Once you've filled it up - see if it improves the gearchanges

i cheated - I put my car on a Hill after getting to fill level - (nose up higher) opened the Fill hole and Put about 100ml extra in there

Since Whitesei and i have a feeling that the Input bearing doesn't get oil due to the camber been wrong on the UK roads
A lil extra Oil Means it gets to the bearing a lil quicker :)
Parking with the N/S wheels up on kerb is also a good way to make sure bearing gets some oil now and then :)

It might not drain very well unless both drain and fill plugs are taken out.

The clutch failure pattern for these cars is stiff to select gears because the clutch is not releasing properly. If the pedal action is stiff or lumpy or bouncy its the clutch. Don't forget to check that input bearing when the box is taken off the car. Any slack at all = scrap bearing needs to be changed.

The one with the blue line is the filler hole and is the small rusty bolt the drain plug as that is all i can find on my gear box, 2nd pick what is the black cap for dose anything goin in there??

The Black Plastic Cap is the Gearbox Breather

The Filler Hole is on the Passenger Side - Facing the Fan - its literally right infront of you

The Drain Plug is on the passenger side - its sorta on a triangular corner

Red = Filler
Blue = Drain - its facing the passenger literally - its the lowest Point
