Hi Punto forum, I had a Punto years ago but now reside mostly in the Stilo section. However I have always wanted a Mk1 Punto Cabriolet and have just seen one for sale. Its really cheap and I would just be buying it as an indulgence to drive around in the summer months, I am now at an age where insuring a soft top is the same as insuring any other car:) Its only a 1.2 has tax and mot 65K on the clock and seems to be in good condition, I am just wondering if anyone here has one and what I need to look for, are there any common problems or reasons not to buy? It has a personalised number plate right now so not sure of the exact age but the mileage is reasonable for an old car. My son was going to share the cost and we were going to share the car as we both have Stilos that we would keep. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you:)

All the usual stuff
Brakes - grooved discs
tyres - tread and even wear
battery - cheap enough but can cause steering and other electrical glitches
exhaust
cam belt (if alternator belt is cracking across ribs be suspicious of cam belt)
coolant watery = neglected servicing
sump oil ditto
Clutch should not feel lumpy
Check jacking points and sills for rust

Oh yes :) the hood should fold and seal properly

Hi Fiona.

No need to worry about the electric power steering as the Cab is a Mk1.

As well as all the general things listed above, check the following cab specifics...

Rear plastic window on the hood... check this is in good condition and not broken or glazed, as they are expensive to replace. General condition of the hood is important, the stitching is known to rot so look closely at this.

The later 1.2 version is generally believed to be better than the 1.6 version. Both for economy reasons and reliability. Also several little problems were fixed on the later cars.

Hope that helps,
Alan

The only constructive thing i can add is these cars mainly stand about a lot which is bad
so
dont led heart lead head and thoroughly inspect the underside prior to purchase irrespective of that fresh gleaming mot (theres still mates of mates that will do owt for dates in this world)
