Technical Heads off, what else should i do? how to change valve stem seal? mk1 8v 1.2

Hi all,

My punto lives on, at a ripe old 85k, im getting it ship shape for my lil bro to use as his first car....it served me for my first car, then my older bro for his first car...and it goes on!

im swapping the heads over with a donor car because mine developed a tapping from the head due to running with no oil in the head.

Ive had the donor head skimmed, and given it a general clean.

Ive go the headgasket set incl:

headgasket
Rocker cover gasket
Inlet manifold gasket
exhaust manifold gasket
thermostat gasket
camshaft oil seal
Valve stem oil seals

i know where they all go and how to put them in except for the valve stem seals, any help would be greatley appreciated.

and is there anything i should do whilst the head is off that would be usefull?

thanks all

For the valve oil seals you have to take the valves out and insert the new ones using a small piece of tube/or similar placed on the end of the valve stem. There normally provided with one in the bag. If you don't use the tube you risk piecing the seal with the valve stem and having to do the job again anyway.

If you can't do it yourself then you'll have to either get the tools to do it or take it to a garage/machine shop and ask them to do it for a small cost.

You will need a valve spring compressor to compress the spring on the valve. Not to sure about the process but its basically compress the spring and take off the collet's on the valve to get it out. A Haynes manual will explain it all correctly.

Once you have it out you remove the old seals and place the new ones in, then insert the valve with the plastic shielding on the end back into the head and reverse the process.

Hmmm you may find one off the internet. The halfrauds one is a universal one I think so may be hit or miss (more likely miss). You know anyone that can lend you one? Maybe even someone on here could lend it you for the cost of postage.

have you done the valve seals yet?

im 1/2 way thru doin mine at the min, hoping to sort out my oil burning issue.

they way im doin it is, using a big G clamp to compress the spring, then magnetic tip screwdriver to get the 1/2 pieces out, som pliers to rag off the old seal, then 10mm socket to hold the new seal and tap it down into place wit a hammer.

While im at it, im give the valves & ports a good clean,de carb, de coke.

I done my head about 2~3000 miles ago and cleaned (a quick clean) the valves then, and im surprised with the amount of stuff on them already.

also cleaned each part as i took it off, throttle body, inlet manifold etc...

its a time consuming process...but hopefully it will be worth all the effort
