Hi,
My punto selecta (99t) developed really weird fault. Gearlever is really hard to move from N. No problem when you move it from P to R or from D to L while you driving. Once in Drive , works fine. Any ideas ? (if you haven't guessed totally clueless about cars so layman explanations / causes pls)

does it just get stuck ot make a crunching noise when it aventually moves? i had one that did it but with crunching noise it was oil pump in the gearbox, got another box for that cheeper than repair. if not selector cable might be catching on somthing on top of gearbox

It makes slight crunching noise when you move from N to D. but once in D it works like a charm. How to check cable thingie ?

look under bonnet see if any thing is in its way

edit have you also checked the brushes on the clutch? tells you how in the haynes manual

These are an automatic box but with a eletromagnetic clutch also. You need to check that the pedal switch's are working correctly, Brake and accelerator switchs. If o.k then it sounds like the eletromagnetic clutch not releasing correctly, and may need a new one. (Box Out And Part About £600) . But must get check by garage before this replaced as not cheap.
