Hello!

First, to make it clear that i´m very familiar with cars/engines and so on, but has not collected that much knowledge of Fiat before, despite driving tipo/tempra as "daily communter", they never really gave me a reason to dig into them though :)

I´ve doned some reading, and some searching on this subject but havn´t exactly found the pinpointed info i´m after.

Have:

1pc Punto mk1 1.1 55 which has overheated, warped head and blown gasket. Bottom end looks VERY good for a 140000km engine, can´t even feel the edges that usually has developed by then from the pistonrings at the "turnpoints", don´t know the word in english.....

The head is very warped, defenitly about 0.2-0.5mm in the middle, but not visible cracks. I´m not shure if i should spend money on having int machined or just pick another head at a scrappy and "refurbish".

In a scrappy nearby there´s a punto 75 1.2mpi, i understand that head is fitted with a somewhat "hotter" cam, but can i use this head on my engine?, by a quick look the bolting for the inlet and exhaust and other things, looks the same.

Looks like i can just take that head as a whole, refurbish and bolt the 1.1 55 externals to it and go?

Pro´s / Con´s ?

Why not swap the whole engine and gearbox.

# Whatever the visible condition 140K Km is a lot of use for the old lump.
# The new top end will increase the stress considerably.
# The 55 probably has less sophisticated engine parts as it makes less power. e.g. cast rather than forged conrods.
# The gearbox ratios are probably different (and the old box will be well worn).

Yes, well, those are the normal con´s for putting "higher spec" stuff on a lower spec well used engine.

I´m aware of those, it´s more a questrion of machining and refurbish the old head, or buy the other head since it shall not be warped to start with.

Don´t belive the stress will be very significant on a SPI unit with just a slightly hotter cam. Have doned similar operations on PSA TU engines on pugg 106:s with good results in the past. It´s not like i´ll add 10-15hp to the engine

If it fails further down the road i´ll just replace it with a 1.6unit.

So, will it physically fit?, will the manifolds fit the head? etc.

I thought your were hoping to get the 55 block making 75. But keeping the 55 throttle body just whack it on, they all seem to be the same**.

Just to be sure you could take the old 55 head down to the scrappy and measure it against the 75 before you buy.

** Fiat like their modular designs - I'm told even the Alfa 1.8 TS head will fit the Punto HGT block.

Yes, this is my "daily runner" which i drive to work, pick up kids at school and hoover around the country dealing carparts at "bootsales", in.

The head is there to pickup for me, i´ve seen info somewhere that the stud/hole pattern should be different between the spi/mpi engines but it looks VERY much the same from the look of it.
