Bullsh*t, emissions can fail due to a faulty lambda sensor or a failed cat. Either that or engine just needs a really good ragging! If you weren't so far away I would have had it from you!

Did he give you the emmision test print out?

i left the car with him and hes gonna have a propper look at it during the weekend and mon-tues.ive got my eye on a 1.1 litre 206 tho, so if it doas need the expensive rebuild im gonna scrap the punto(maybe do a couple of handbrake turns first) and then buy that.i did get the car cheap tho but the personi got it of sed was good runner and doasnt sound feel like tractor lol nice description.

NO PRINT-OUT FROM THE EMISSIOINS BUT IT CAME UP ON SCREEN RED CROSS, GREEN TICK, RED CROSS

I think he's having you on.
206's are nice though! The accelerator is higher than the other 2 pedals for some reason though. I test drove an 09 plate last year. 1.1 engines aren't too strong on them though. If it's an early model. pre 2000 there are quite a few problems and recalls the 1.1 has had
Id go for a 1.1 saxo if you do decide to get something else. But I really would suggest taking it to a reputable garage for a 2nd opinion on the car. Tell them before hand that you will be scrapping it if the work needs doing so they don't con you aswell

YEAH THANKS FOR ADVICE, what sort of money do you think i could get a roadworthy car for these days, cheapest possible and please dont say ford fiesta:bang:

Nah, I don't do Fiesta's. £1000 but you can pay that or more and get a heap again. Need to really know what your looking for.
Don't expect to go to a dealer, pay abit more and get a great car. Exactly the same as a private seller or even worse. May be worth asking a mechanic to check it all over for you and pay them for it.

As I said though. Don't just scrap your car. It might still be fine and obviously isn't mis-firing as he said so he's having you on right there for starters

hey dude, i completely agree with bredsticz. Take it to another garage and be honest with them and say your gonna scrap it if it's beyond economical repair.

Don't tell the next garage about what the first one said (i wouldn't anyway) just tell them that there is some sort of leak that you want sorting. It might not be too bad an idea to get them to give the car a look over too, or give it a checkup yourself. If you got the car dead cheap i personally think it would be worth your time (or paying a mechanic) to check the brake wear, fluid and other safety bits and bobs.

For what it's worth i had a coolant leak from the bottom rad hose, despite the juberliee clip being bloody tightened good, Its tricky (but no means impossible) to get a non leak connection on that hose. I managed it in the end by putting 2 clips on it and moving the hose around a bit.

Regarding buying another car... if you dont have a mechanic friend to come along with you to check one out you can pay the AA or RAC i believe (don't quote me on that i might be wrong) to come and check a car's health. (an MOT doesn't mean an awful lot) and dealers need to make money :)

UPDATE!!!

HEAD GASKET IS NOT GONE, IT HAS A SLIGHT MISSFIRE WHICH IVE BEING QUOTED 230 QUID TO SORT OUT PLUS 40 QUID FOR AN MOT (SORTING ENGINE OUT NOT PART OF THE MOT).GONNA GO WITH THAT AND HOPE FOR THE BEST, ONCE ITS BEING DONE I SHOULD BE BE ABLE TO RUN IT FOR A WHILE 6MOTHS TO A YEAR WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS WHICH WAS THE INTENTION TO BRING MY INSURENCE DOWN.ASWELL AS LEARN BODYWORK REPAIRS ON IT AT COLLAGE. ILL LET YOU KNOW ALL THE INFO AS IT COME TO ME, MANY THANKS GUYS.

THE MOT WILL FAIL ON I THINK FROM THE FOLLOWING - HANDBRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON, LICENCE PLATE LIGHT BULB GONE, WINDSCREEN WIPER BLADE, MIDDLE SECTION OF EXHAUST PIPE NEEDS SECUREING AS THE RUBBER MOUNT HAS come off/loose.

the only other thing is that the floor doas seem to be slightly corroded but the guy sedit will last about a year. which is ok for my purpose as above.

any other common things that go wrong with the mk1 punto please let me know thanks thanks thanks :):):)

You can't get a SLIGHT miss-fire. It either is or isn't also £230 quid for a mis-fire is more thatn twice what it'd actually cost. Get MOT done there and stay clear afterwards! Guys trying to get as much from you as he can!

yeah getting it all done there for a starters then ellswhere with any other problems. just want it finished with now its being draggin on abit

It's not actualluy mis-firing though. He's charging you "260 for nothing. Tell him you'll get the MOT done and bring it back for the miss-fire as you don't have the money yet. Its the easiest way out. But I'm sure you don't wanna pay £260 for nothing! Which is the classical thing garages say to charge you for things not needed. I presume he's blaming the ECU aswell

well i dont really know what he exaCTLY sed but i just want it sorted out as soon as really.he sed it needed work on it to pass emissions which is part of mot so the work has to be done really.

Do you have the emmisions print out of it failing in the 1st place? Or did he even test it? If you don't mind spending that for nothing then carry on but only trying to warn you and save you being ripped off

not the print out but seen it on screen 2red crosses 1 green tick.by slight missfire i rthink he ment that it was only missfireing on 1 cylinder and not all 4 ive heared missfiring on all 4 cylinders and that doas sound like a tractor.

lmao, miss-firing on alll 4 cylinders is the engine not running at all. 1 cylinder out is REALLY noticed and sounds like a tractor. Pull one of the HT leads off then start the car up. THAT'S a miss-fire

Ask him which cylinder it's miss-firing on and get him to show you by pulling the HT leads out one at a time. If it is miss-firing when one of the leads is pulled it won't make any difference to the running of the engine. If the engine runs worse when the HT lead is pulled then that cylinder is fine.

You also CAN'T have a slight miss-fire, it either is or isn't
