hi guys n girls, sorry if these questions have been asked a million times!

my girlfriend has a punto 1.2sx twincam 16v on a T-plate, and she wants more power out of it. mods we have considered are an FSE boost valve, full system exhuast and pipercross viper kit.

most of the mods appear to be available for the 1.2 sporting, but not specifically for the 1.2 sx. is there any difference with the engines on the sporting and SX? would the said mods for a sporting go straight onto an SX model?

cheers in advance :D

steve

Im sure the 1.2sx is only 8 valve and has SPI (single point injection) whereas the Sporting has MPI (multi point injection).
Its very unlikely that the sporting engine mods will fit straight on.

this model of punto is (according to the v5 logbook and car badges) a 1.2 SX, twincam 16v, and ive looked and it isnt just a fake badge, there is actually a DOHC engine in there! [xx(] there is no designation as to some kind of model number, i.e. on most basic puntos u have punto 89, punto 65 or whatever.

im confused, but thanx for the reply anyway Evil-Punto. perhaps somebody else could shed some light on this?

ta :)

Sounds like an 85sx...but twin cam....I don't think so. Maybe I'm mistaken but its not a tc engine....if so please correct my ignorance.

Mk1 1.2 16v appeared in the post 97 elx, sporting and 85 - nothing else.

Other designations were 55, 75, 90, GT and Selecta. Should say under the hood.

I'm no help at all so I'll just kick my own arse.

16v is a twin cam, according to Parkers it was available in 85SX trim. You've got it, you've checked it, I'll believe you fella!

55 was an 1108, 60 and 75 = 1242 8v, 85 = 1242 16v TC, 90 = 1600cc.

I'd suggest that the SX and Sporting engines would be identical, but it may pay to be cheeky and drop into a used car place and have a mooch under the bonnet of a Sporting to compare. Some early sportings were 1600cc I believe, so check it's the right one first.

The mods you suggest should give a useful gain, I'd look into chipping too as this can give as much again - especially on an engine with decent induction and exhaust. If you want better acceleration, steer clear of putting bigger wheels on too - this increases the gearing and slows it all down. Lower it to make the wheels fill the arches instead!

thanx mate, spot on reply, just what i wanted to know!

i shall have a look under the bonnet of a sporting and report my findings so the next person in my shoes will know what the deal is.

"If you want better acceleration, steer clear of putting bigger wheels on too - this increases the gearing and slows it all down"

this i find to be very true, i swapped the 13's on my modified cavalier for 16's, and although they look the part, the braking and acceleration certainly plummeted.

thanx again.

just come back from a fiat dealership, where i was told that the twincam 16v 1.2 lump in the sporting would be IDENTICAL to the 1.2 twincam 16v lump in the gf's punto. it sounds logical but this is coming from a sales monkey who asked me to describe what i meant by a "mk1" punto.

The 1.2 16V engine is, I believe, identical in the 85SX, 85ELX and sporting MK1.

At least it has all the same dimensions (bore, stroke, HP, torque etc)

The 1.2 16V engine in the Mk2 Punto and Stilo is the same engine but with a different tune, In this application it only gives 80BHP not 85 but has a much smoother torque curve and I believe a higher peak torque. It is not as much fun but probably easier to drive as the earlier engine felt like a 16V engine as the power curve increase noticable above 5000rpm and continues to pull to the red line whilst the new one has a much smoother increase and seems to run out of steam before getting to max revs.

If you go for larger wheels you will need to go much lower profile to keep the performance and the ride will be dreadful.

I wonder why you or your girlfriend want more power as in standard form it should be able to cruise all day fully laden at over 100MPH (where allowed of course). Due to its size and gearing from a standing start to about 30MPH it is very fast and should spin the front wheels with any significant moisture on the road, I couldn't keep up with my wife to these speeds when driving my car (SAAB 9-3 Aero 205BHP 0-60 in 6.9s max 147) Mind you I would go past as if she was in reverse at about 35MPH.

thx for the reply mate :D

she wants more power cos it dont feel fast enough. to be honest its the speed up to 70 rather than speed up to 100, she dont like to red-line every gear to get max accelearation out of it.

ive said to her that larger wheels will only increase gearing, and she's agreed to stick to 15's....

btw, how can i tell exactly what model this punto is? badges just say 16v. i believe the logbook just says something like "fiat punto sx 1.2 16v"

would this be the 85SX then? it has red seats if thats any help.

Sounds like an 85SX, I don't think they were produced for very long.

She really shouldn't worry about 'redlining' it in every gear - that is how most Italian men drive and that is the market the engine is designed for.

The basic design of any 16V engine is to allow better breathing at high revs and they need to be revved to get the power, I suspect any mods that you try will make very little difference at low revs thus she would still have to use lots of revs. The car should accelerate to 60 in just over 10 seconds. Not using revs above 5000 gave a performance similar to my previous Punto TD.

I never felt mine to be slow but it did need revs, the engine management system on the MK2 with the same engine does change the behaviour to give more torque lower down the rev range but the buzz above 5000 revs has gone.

if its any help i own a mk1 98(s) punto 85sx, it is a 1200 16vmpi (multipoint injection) and im sure its dohc although it looks like a sohc. it comes win elec windows, power steering, rev counter, manual sunroof, foglights, rear headrests, slightly tinted windows, and sporting front bumper(bigger front grill) the sporting is the same but has a full console running to the floor, black interior(semi bucket seats) factory alloys, slightly stiffened suspension but the engine is the same. if u look at the number ie 60, 75 etc this is the spec number, all lower ones are classed the same but the 85 is always classed with the sporting wen buying mods, in short its a cheaper sporting with the same performance.

hope this helps a little.

quick question of my own, u said ur considering a boost valve, i thought they were for turbo'd cars only?? am i mistaken?

andy

It dont matter if u win by an inch or a mile ... winnings winning!
