Hey People

Before my car went in for a HG repair i had noticed a red light was on just above the fuel indicator.
I know this light isn't the fuel low warning as this is an amber light on the dial itself.
Is this the engine management light or something to do with temp etc, as i had seen it on briefly a few times

Thanks

Kris

I have all the original book and manuals etc, but it doesnt say in any of them what that light means...

Thanks
Kris

hi kris
what model of mk1 is it (60s elx gt sporting etc?) im sure if u give us somne more info (position of light rough outline when it occurs) etc im sure well b able to hel;p you out

thanks alex

If it hasnt got a temperature gauge and the light is just to the right of the fuel gauge then it to tell you the car is overheating, Probably the cause of the HG failure or a symptom of it.

Think you are right, have done a bit of homework and it appears to be the temp warning light. Considering my HG has just gone would of helped if i knew :)

Thanks

Same thing happened to me, it is an over heating light which would have explained why the head gasket went.

You may want to change the instrument panel for one from a higher spec model. You only need the new cluster, temperature sender and some wire then you get a temp gauge and rev counter. Means that you can keep an eye on the running temp of the engine in case there is a problem thats causing the car to overheat thats then caused the HG to fail.

Which panel would you recommend me getting? And is it difficult to wire?

Thanks

It's covered in the guides section. From what I can remember, not difficult. It's a case of removing the two torx screws at the top of the instruments, pulling the cluster forward and disconnecting the wiring blocks. Then you splice a blue wire (check the guide for which one), run an extra wire between that and one of the pins in the wiring blocks. Then clip the blocks into your new instrument cluster, push it back into place and put the two screws back in.

One problem that you may have is that the odometer readings are different. If you want to solve this, you can swap the speedometer and odometer unit out of your original unit and into the new one.

Means there is a fault with the immboliser / Security Protocol with Key

Either its getting a weak signal from the Key - OR the immboliser is now deactivated due to a fault

Worth getting it checked out - as it could make it easier for a local yob to hot wire it :(
