Hi,

Can anyone give me some advice regarding the fan on my 1995 Fiat punto. It seems to be cutting in far too regularly after i have only been sitting in traffic for just a few minutes. I am sure this is not normal? as i would have thought you would need to be sitting in traffic for alot longer before the fan comes on? If anyone could please offer me some advice on what i can do to sort the problem i would appreciate it. I have had a problem with my heater which now seems okay but the fan is still playing up. I am just hoping to get another years use out of the car before i look at getting something a bit newer.

Thanks,

steven.

Hi,

Thanx for your reply

I have recently had my heater looked at by a mechanic who had to flush the heather matrix as i wasnt getting any hot air coming out. When doing this he sorted out all the coolant, so i dont think it is linked to that. The fan has been cutting in like this for a while now.

my 1996 punto does that sometimes aswell especially when im moving on the biteing point

I find mine cuts in farly often while im sitting in traffic, However if your worried you could get the switch replaced (its located in the radiator and just threads in).

Well we can rule out the coolant now, so maybe a faulty thermostat or water pump ? Is it keeping normal temperature or has it risen higher than normal? When you look at the temp guage carefully when engine's warm does the needle move up and down very slightly at normal operating temperature? When the fan cuts in then yes there'll be a slight tempreture drop which is normal as the fan is doing it's job. If the needle is 'bobbing' slightly and higher than you have experienced when at operating temperature during regular journeys then usually not a good sign I'm afraid...

Hi,

If i replace the switch is this likely to stop it cutting in so much?

Hi,

Operating tepmerature seems fine, also resently had thermostat replaced and was told water pump was ok. I just find it a bit weird for the fan to be cutting in so much when its winter time, or am i reading too much into it?

Hi again

When you do a regular journey, how long is the journey and how many times do you reckon your fan is cutting in ?

Hi,

Sorry for late reply, if i do a 20mins journey and i sit in traffic for 5mins it cuts in then cuts in at regular intervals if i keep sitting in traffic but if i move off then it doesnt cut in.

Maybe a partially blocked radiator...? If the heater matrix needed flushing the cooler rad may need it too.

I wouldnt worry about it. If you say the thermostat is new, coolant is new, temp gauge is showing okay temperature i wouldnt worry.
The fan is designed to cut in and out regularly even in winter, its will just run for a longer period in the summer as the outside air the fan is pulling throught the radiator is warmer in summer and cooler in winter thus cooling down quicker in winter or slower in summer.
