Technical Is Mk1 1996 Punto 55SX OBD II Compliant?

I have a Mk1 1996 Punto 55SX which as people may have seen from a previous post has failed its MOT on emissions and I am in the process of deciding whether or not to scrap.

But due to a post from another member I am now looking in to maybe repairing the car if I can find the fault and I was wondering if the car is complaint before I spend money on an OBD II reader.

Is there something before OBD II which may be relevant to this model?

mk1 puntos are Fiat 3 pin, only obdII are midway through the mk2 range..

mine is 11/2000 mk2 and is not obdII compliant..

My HGT is Y reg how can I check if its OBDII compliant? (sorry to hijack the thread!!)

If the engine warning lamp is red it is not, if its yellow then it is.

There is a thread on here somewhere with the diagrams etc to build a code reader for the mk1s (believe its in the cinq section). You need a laptop with a serial port though.

mine is w reg and has a 16 pin female pluf in the fuse box, does that mean any 16 pin reader will work?

You need the fiat ecu scanner (free) and the correct wire witch just plugs into your usb port
