Hi all.. I have just bought a Punto 60s of 98 with only 34 thousand Miles. The engine looks very tidy the headgasket and cambelt have been changed recently and it has just been serviced.
I have noticed, upon driving it for a little while, a gearbox noise. The gears go up and down without a problem, only when coming to a traffic light (car stationary, gearbox neutral and clutch up) the gearbox make a noise (small noise, something spinning (no whining, rattling or banging)).
Any advice would be most appreciated.

After listening more carefully, I can hear the noise not only in neutral but on every gears. As that noise is not laud at all so I did not realize it before.
Any idea will be the welcome.
Cheers

Nobody experienced similar noises?
Is it a normal noise , or is it something that need to be investigated?

Any idea will be the welcome:worship:

i have this same noise, don't stress out its just the thrust bearing spinning in the shaft,

Ok! Thanks for your comment.(y)

So if I understood well I will have to worry if I don't hear it anymore;)

More seriously, how long did you drive with your noisy thrust bearing? Did it get worst?

Cheers

i have the exact same car and the exact same noise its nothing to worry about i have been using my car for about 2 months with it like that

had this problem since i bought the car in december, already done 15k since then and its not missed a beat,

my 99 T 60 SX has similar gearbox noises especially at idle in neutral , been like it for 20K hasn't got any better or worse.
Some days I feel like stripping it down to investigate , then common sense kicks in.

Thanks guys (y)

I'll leave it like that for a little while!

Anybody knows how much could it cost to change the bearing?

As Rallcing says you don't just change the bearing(it'll only save you £25 anyway) The noise you describe is unlikely to be the release bearing, these run silentlty. when they start making a noise they chew through the clutch in a matter of days. The noise you hear is from internal bearings in the gearbox. Fiestas make exactly the same noise. Clutch down-quiet. Clutch up turn the radio off-gentle whirring. Nothing you can do except make sure gearbox oil level is correct.

you've all forgoten one thing .. i had the same noise and always thouigh it was the release bearing (thrust baring) but it turned out to be " the lower release arm" (not sure thats the real name :-( ) in the gear box .. get it to a mechanic they might be abble to save it for a fraction of the price!

Yes, it makes more sense that the noise comes from the gearbox and not from the clutch, as I can only hear the noise while the clutch is up (if it was a clutch problem I should probably have heard the noise all the time).

How can I check the gearbox oil level?

Cheers
