I've got electrical gremlins in my Punto Cabrio, P Reg.

Initially, the blower became intermittent, then the wipers stopped working, now neither the wipers or blower will come on.

I have had a look at this thread but the connectors seem to be either in a different place or completely different!

In the past someone has done a bit of a bodge wiring job, so that the blower and wipers will run without the ignition turned on.

I've just had the connector off the back of the fan switch and run a live to it, but nothing happened. However, with the wipers turned on on the stalk, the wiper motor activates on 3 of the 5 wires, which seems to indicate a common supply with maybe a blown fuse or other dodgy connection?

Anyone got any idea? I've tried to trace the wiring back as far as I can but I can't see anything obviously spliced in.

:bang:

Thanks!! Polly.

Edit - just realised I also said MkII - well I meant Mark I doh

Arrrggghhhhh! now the bloody headlights are on all the time, I haven't even changed any connections, only given connectors a jiggle as I've traced the wiring (and run the live temporarily to the back of the fan switch, now disconnected).

I am losing the will to live :bang:

Edit : DOH - as they say you learn something new every day! I didn't realise that the Punto has a parking lights setting on the ign barrel! So thats one problem solved anyway lol

Now I am really pee'd off, I thought changing the fuses might be an idea and now the bloody thing won't start. It turns over nice and fast but farts and pops and runs rough as owt.

I have dropped the negative off the battery for a few mins to see if that will reset the ECU, but that seemed to make things a bit worse, if anything!

Scrapyard here we come lol

Right - I am happy to say that this is now sorted!

The engine now starts up and runs ok, I guess it just needed some time for the ECU to reset itself.

As for the heater/blower and wipers, having spent an age tracing the wiring I ended up changing a relay on the back of the fuseboard and it turns out that this is wonky. Its a five pin 30 A relay that serves both the wipers and blower and if it was on its way out that would explain the intermittent operation of the blower and wipers. Turns out that it was a 2 minute job that took about 5 hours to find!

PS you can recognise the relay because it is yellow and located at the bottom of the fuseboard - you can see it easily if you stick your head in the drivers footwell. This is for the 1.6MPI engined cabrio which I think is different to other MkI layouts.

Glad you got it sorted, a pity however no-one was here to answer it earlier so that you wouldn't have spent 5 hours trying to eliminate the problem! :D

If you look at the dates you'll see there was several months, but mostly with the car just sitting on the drive and me ignoring it!!

It seems that there aren't enough 1.6 MK1 cabrios about to have loads of people on here familiar with them - you live and learn!!!
