Hello,

Today, I took delivery of a 1998 Punto 60S, in black and in need of some niggly jobs fixing before I put it up for sale.

On the drive back from picking it up, I noted that the brake system warning light was on, reverse was difficult to engage and, although it went into the other gears fine, these were a little notchy.

I examined the clutch slave cylinder and felt a damp residue around the seals, which smelt like brake fluid, which also explained the low level in the resevoir!!.

Now, a slave is available cheap enough for me to replace with a new unit, but, what I want to know, is once fitted, where would I bleed the circuit from or is it self bleeding?

Other questions.

The car has a lazy starter. I have a spare starter for the 1.2 Punto, I should be able to get to the starter from underneath without issue, but I was just wondering if this is a hard task or if there is anything I should be wary of.

Apart from that, the car has just 38K on the clock, drives nicely with no clonks or groans from the suspension and has that all important red key!!

Thanks in advance,

James

I don't think it's starter at that millage, if it had over 100.000 or 150.000 miles, then it would be possible, but not at 38.000.

Check also battery and connectors

Is there any difference if you starting it in neutral or in gear (clutch pressed of course)?

Hello,

It seems to start a little easier if I put the car in neutral and dip the clutch in. I was wondering if the flywheel teeth could be damaged at any point around the flywheel.

Annoying, today, I fitted the new slave cylinder and bleed it out, closing the nipple with the clutch pedal pushed fully in.

On starting and trying to select a gear, she was a bit sticky with the forward gears, but just as difficult getting into reverse.

Is it worth trying to bleed even more, as I only did around 5 complete presses of the clutch, which may not have been enough time to drag the clean fluid through.

Thanks,

James
