Hi there !

I have a Punto MK1 R reg 60sx and all of a sudden last week the heater did not seem to heat up at all. I was guessing it might be a problem with a cooling levels but earlier today when my mum was driving it in a car park aparently the temp went very high and steam was coming out of the inside vents which it has never done either before but after that it drove back fine and kept at a normal temp. But im not curious to know whether the head gasket has gone ? or i need to bleed my radiator ? or whatever.

Thanks

only get the headgasket checked if it constantly overheats..

when it overheats, try bleed the radiator if it doesnt work take it to the garage to be checked.

Ah thanks! i'll try to get it to a garage soon, i just checked the coolant level and it was practically empty so i shall bleeding it and topping it up and hope that may do the trick !

It is worth trying to figure where the coolant is going, you may be losing it through a failed headgasket, leaking radiator or pipe or a rotten core plug for example. So when you top up and bleed it watch what happens and try to locate the cause :)

Ah ok then, Is there anyway of checking if the headgasket has gone ? The temp averages around half way but sometimes goes up to about 3/4 but is usually brought back down within a minute or so.

Compression test, or if the expansion tank smells of exhaust fumes when opened or you have a mayo like substance on the expansion bottle cap are 3 common ways of telling. It's hard to tell via the exhaust whilst the weather is as cold as it is :)
