Technical How Can I Read Fault Codes On Mk1 Punto?

My daughter's got a R reg 1.2 8v Punto 60 and i want to access the fault codes stored on the ECU ( if any). Can the cheaper scanners read them with the right connector lead (3 pin), Or is it only the dearer ones that can?
I have a 3 pin lead to 16 pin adapter but can't find any scanners that can access the codes on the Mk1, I also have a EOBD scanner that reads the codes on my wife's Mk2 but it's not capable of reading generic codes,, If any one can point me in the right direction please do...:bang:

as far as i know the fault codes can only be read by the fiat examiner

The interface required is relatively simple to build. Software is available free on this forum. Bloodsucker wrote some s/w way back on the cinq section.
