Hi all..

My punto mk1 (60) is down at the garage for MOT and interim service.

Chap @ the garage phoned to say that it was overheating on the road test & has traced the problem to the thermostat.
I'm not entirely sure I believe him, as i've never seen the red light on while running - that said perhaps they stick the revs up during the test or something.. as the car has done 80K miles it seems like a reasonable move as a precaution in any case I suppose.

If I go ahead... to replace the thermostat and check it he wants to charge me £55 labour, £18 for the part.

Part cost seems OK to me, but is the labour cost a bit excessive ? I'm in SW London which i guess makes it a bit more pricey.

Has anyone had this done, if so how much did it cost you ?

Hi mate,

£55 for labour is probably bout 0.75 hour being london, which is about right. You could do it yourself much cheaper. Its very straight forward.

Alan

I'd ask the garage to guarantee to you that it is definitely the Thermostat and not anything else, otherwise add that cost to the next bill if its the Head Gasket. They should be willing and able to prove it.

OK thanks for the quick response there. Just wanted to check. I think I'll let them do it then... don't want to take any chances really seeing as I have no temp gauge !

So given that they've charged me 18 quid + VAT for it, probably safe to assume that their mark up on everything else is 60% too :)
Checked with Firrella in Clapham which I see a few have recommended (too late now!) who quoted me 14 quid for the part - will take it there for its next service i reckon.
