Just registered and I need some help.
Bought a 1998 Punto SX60 yesterday while I'm waiting for insurance to pay out for an accident I had (not my fault!). The person I bought it off only had a red key. Just been to the key cutter to see about 2 blue keys, £30 each. He said I need to have keys made specifically for the car, but browsing this forum I got the impression I can get blank keys cut on the metal to fit the locks and ignition and then program them to the car using a sequence?

So I have the red master key, do the blue keys need to be made for the car; or can I get blank keys and then program them to the car?

Any help appreciated, need to sort this out.

Right, so I went and got the 2 blue keys cut. They are cut fine and fit the locks (just). I followed the instructions, red, blue 1, blue 2, red. All the way through and it didn't work. I've done it a few times now and the blue keys still don't start the car.

I've just thought to mention as I don't know if its related that there is a light in the dash on, the "!" in the circle, had this got anything to do with it? This is always on and doesn't go off.

Hi mate,

Are there any symbols on the metal part of your blue keys by any chance?

The warning light will be your handbreak/break fluid warning light. If it doesnt go off when you take the handbreak off, then i would check your break fluid ASAP.

Ooops:D, brake fluid very slightly down, only had the car for a week so didn't realise that was what it was.

I just got the keys from a locksmith shop. They have no symbols but have definately got the chip inside. He mentioned something about the Red key having a glass chip in (looks like a small pill), when he thought it should have something else in it? Something to do with a T-code or something, I can't remember.

Just googled "fiat blank keys" and came up with this link:

http:// www. tradeinpost .com/ fiat1.html

(Can't post links so remove the spaces)

He's given me the key on the right, from the writing below, it seems I need the key on the left (Punto 1998). So could this be the problem or doesn't the shape of the key matter?

Worked for me.

I have one key.

Its wee and black.:(

Hi mate,

Just to check, what part of this did not work (obv the keys dont start the car at the end), but where in this sequence did it not go right? (ie did the code light go out after step 3 etc)

1. Put red key in ignition and to mar, wait for code light to go out
2. Remove red key from ignition
3. Put first blue key in ignition and turn to mar and wait for code light to go out
4. Remove Blue key
5. Put second blue key in ignition and turn to mar and wait for code light to go out
6. Remove second blue key
7. Put red key in to the ignition and turn to mar and wait for code light to go out
8. Turn red key back to off and wait 10 seconds
9. Turn red key to mar again and wait for code light to go out.

Now place one of the blue keys in the ignition, turn to mar, and the "code" light should go out

I'm not buying off the net Dave, got it from the locksmith, just looked on the net to make sure he gave me the right key.

1. Put red key in ignition and to mar, wait for code light to go out (This takes about a second)
2. Remove red key from ignition
3. Put first blue key in ignition and turn to mar and wait for code light to go out (The code light stays on, I even tried just leaving it there for 5 minutes and it didn't go off)

I've tried all sorts of combinations to get it to work, nothing, the immobiliser just kicks in every time, but still starts first time on the red.

correct me if im wrong, as there are people here that know allot more than me.

But this sounds like that ure red key is just a "blue key in disguise" i.e. its a RED coloured key but has been programmed like a blue key. this would lead to ure problem.

Thinking outside the box. That would be a good explanation, the key had scuffs on the side of it as though it has been opened before and the locksmith said he thought it had the wrong chip inside.

I'll try getting some pics up of the key and the chip inside and see what you think.
