hey, im new to this and fiats,

what it is i have just bought a punto mk1 55sx 1.108cc and have noticed a few problems
  1. rocker cover gasket gone (can fix my self)
  2. there is a whiring noise coming from the drivers side of the engine near some belts etc, i have only noticed it once or twice but it gets louder with the revs and it doesnt start untill the engine has been running for a bit (please note it is only sat on drive at mo no TAX )
  3. i have ahd to wire in a switch to the sterio as the prev. owner had chopped the loom about,so this means there is no memory on the sterio and it doesnt come on with the ignition
  4. also should there be any seals on the airbox and its mounts and will it hurt to drill the box if not where would be safe?
please help me as im not good with cars (scooters easy lol) are these minor/major cheap/expensive (age 19 apprectice wages lol)
any other info on this car would be awsome

all help would be very welcome and appreiceated
thanks liam

1. Easy to do. In guides section there's an excellent guide showing how to do it properly.

2. Most likely timing belt tensioner. Easy to do, but you have to know how to time your engine properly.

3. Better get it to auto electrician.

4. Air filter acts as a seal between the two halves, and then there's a seal at the throttle body. Only the part before air filter is safe to drill. But having holes will increase the noise.

Hi Liam,

I second all dj_jl points

A few answers to some of your questions
"# rocker cover gasket gone (can fix my self)"
Easy fix, get some blue hydromar and put it round the two furthest (semi-circular) ends of the gasket otherwise it will leak again!

"# i have ahd to wire in a switch to the sterio as the prev. owner had chopped the loom about,so this means there is no memory on the sterio and it doesnt come on with the ignition"
Mk.1 Punto's don't have the stereo linked up to the ignition switch, this is from the factory, - so its up to you not to forget to leave the radio on when the engines off and drain the battery! Looks like on yours you just need to find the constant live wire. (And probably combine the memory and ignition wires of the radio to the constant live wire on the car).

"also should there be any seals on the airbox and its mounts and will it hurt to drill the box if not where would be safe?"
You can drill it if you must! (in the right place though), but it will only make it more noisy and possibly decrease power when the engine is hot, because it will be drawing in hot air. Far better for it to be drawing in cold air from a remote part of the engine bay.

install an ignition switched live, and then wire it up like a normal headunit with one permanent live and one ignition switched live. it will then work like a normal headunit (despite fiat's best efforts to be different for no apparent reason)
