My GT is S reg, 1998 red. car has done 45,000 miles and is totally standard its never been anywhere im guessing it will be running at 126bhp as standard but, not to happy with it i want more power. I was expecting for the car to be a flying machine but i think my problem is that i have been in my friends Ren Clio 182bhp 2.0 16v and im used to the power of that, the trubo is working fine to my knowledge, the turbo gauge works, and the needle just goes past the half way mark when foot to the floor it does not frop or lose power until i change gear, then ots flat until the turbo kicks in.. For example i floored it in first the turbo kicked in and away it went, then into 2nd gear and it was flat until 3,000rpm then it pulled away again. is this normal for a standard set up?

yes its normal, turbo's have lag, especially turbos that are too big for the engine. the 1.4 8v isnt a great engine so it needs a bigger turbo than it would have in an ideal world. end of the day you can't expect it to have any guys pre-boost, a turbo is not the same as having more displacement. you need to keep the revs high to keep it moving, its the kind of car you need to thrash.

I disagree, and im local if you want to go for a spin in my GT?

Standard turbo will kick in at 2500rpm. Pierburg will run standard boost at 0.8bar however the gauge should flicker up to 1.6bar for a split second, thats overboost so dont worry about it.

The standard turbo on the GT engine is a VL7, a very small T2 which is perfectly matched to the 1.4 8v. A T25 will add a lot more lag, circa 4k rpm before full boost even though its still part of the T2 family however with other matching mods you can expect approx 200bhp with this turbo.

As beau said, chip it then you can turn the boost up a little as the fuelling will be there to support it. A SEB chip will produce approx 160bhp with a few other mods such as a free flowing exhaust and uprated air filter or induction kit, you will then stick with your mates 182

Reality check

Check out PSC and read through the turbo section carefully. Gt tuned to 200bhp tend to be unreliable. A few of us did a poll a little while ago and all but one of the 200bhp puntos was bust, or not working properly.

Boo has never turned a spanner in his life.

160 to 180 seems to be sensible.

You got yours working then GT? Last I read the turbo was broke?

At the moment its idling outside my house to get up to temp, im not going to rush into anything as I dont want to have to fork out 350 for a new lump. Oh and I bought it knowing the turbo was blown.

hi there was just wandering if anyone could tell me if they have heard of a
" titan super chip" fully remappable apparantly?? as i dont no much about super chips so not sure if this is a good one to buy for my punto gt turbo??? thanks

I am thinking of buying a Punto GT, however the car I am looking at has overhead cam wear. It still runs and has an MOT till Aug. Is the overhead cam wear a difficult and expensive repair to be made to the car.

Welcome to the forum Scot.

From what I can gather that pretty much means the head gasket is naffed and so yeah, not going to be cheap.. I could be wrong though so hopefully somebody will eventually hook you up with a definitive answer..

Probably worth using the search feature if you haven't and start your own thread as your post wasn't really relevant to this one and its bloody old :)

right people i havent owned a gt1 for long and basically the car i bought was 256bhp but it looked shabby so i have decided to take the engine out and rebuild an do things properly so, i took the engine out and as i was painting it i decided to remove something that looks to me like some sort of distributor, it has bosch stamped on it and is located near the left hand side of the coilpack, i need to know what this is as its driving me mental now :L also does anyone have a standard camshaft sprocket as mine has vernia and some garage messed with it and i dont know where tdc is :worship:

99.9% sure its the phase sensor you are talking about... has a little window on it with a line and you can see a little disc inside also with a line on it, spins when you turn the gear on the end, assuming you have taken it out..

Its like an engine speed and crank position sensor, although the GT has a more traditional style crank sensor as well and i've never really been sure why it has the phase sensor too, only car i've ever worked on that has one so i understand why it has confused you lol.. but its called a crank phase sensor. When you do the timing on a GT you line everything up belt wise as you would do on any other car and then you have to take the phase sensor out and turn the gear so the line on the disc is in line with the line on the little sight glass and then put it back in while engine still all lined up with the timing marks - its actually pretty damn tricky to get it back without it turning slightly, remember it took me several attempts when i had my old GT to get it in all lined up.

thankyou i did alot of research on it the other day an it wasnt untill i put the part number in google that i knew wtf it was lol another question any idea how to get rid of some of the lag, **** slow till the boost kicks you in the teeth at about 3500 rpm
