Hi everyone;

This is my first post.

Just two days ago this warning light came on on the left of the dashboard just next to the 'code' symbol. I don't have a manual as it was bought 2nd hand from an auction.

If anyone has the answer I'd be very grateful.

Tom

Hi I've just been scanning my punto manuals and its water in the fuel filter. Nice easy fix.

Yeah, I found that that might be the problem after reading these posts. The manual also says it an easy fix but now seems I have air in the system and the 'automatic' bleeding isn't working (can't start the car now). Need to loosen the " injector union nuts " to bleed the air while turning the engine. Once I figure out what the 'injector union nuts' are I'll give it a bash but the Haynes manuals doesn't give much information on this... a bit more reading and I'm sure I'll get it ...

Thanks for all the guidance...

dont panic just yet i,m not quite so aquainted with oil burners but there abit of water in most old diesels i,m told from time to time.. change the filter then take it from there(y) best of luck

Hi Jimboy, glad to hear this isn't automatic car death. Any info on changing the filter would be appreciated.

:)

Hi mate,

First port of call would be to drain the condensate from the filter, you do this buy unscrewing the drain screw/sensor at the bottom of the filter. Place a jam jar or similar underneath to collect the water/diesel mix. Once the diesel starts running neat, then you can do it back up and your done. If the filter is due a change, then you may aswell change it at this stage. Simply do the above method, but keep going untill no more diesel comes out. Then unscrew the filter from its housing like you would an oil filter.

Before offering the new filter up, smear some diesel around the rubber gasket/o-ring at the top, this (much like on an oil filter) will prevent the gasket from puckering up and you nip it up. Simply screw it into place. Its doesnt need to be done up tight. Hand tight will surfice. When switiching on the ignition, wait for the system to prime, and your done.

Hope that helps,
Alan

All fixed now and the car is running nice and smooth.

Just a tip for anyone else who winds up in this thread with the same problem my filter (turbo diesel td sx) was at the rear centre of my engine.

Thanks again all!
:)

Changed my filter with help from here in October but now this light is back on again, I will drain it. I am wondering if it is common for it to be a recurring problem, could it be the heavy rain?

The rain shouldn't be a problem, unless you somehow have it running into the fuel tank. More likely is that wherever you are buying diesel from is supplying poor quality fuel. If their tank isn't properly sealed, or somewhere along the supply chain water is being introduced, then that will cause the problem.

Try buying your fuel from a dfferent garage for a while.

Of course, several months is a long time. The water sensors in the filters are very sensitive (have you ever seen what happens when a diesel engine tries to compress liquid water?) and so it only takes a fairly small amount of water to set the warning light off.

Repeat the draining process, then change your fuel supplier and see if that helps.
