Hey guys, was just wondering if the punto gt's are any good,iv been offerd a 1.4 turbo 1999 reg of my mate.he's buying it off a friend for £400 and sticking a new back bumper on,and new back lights because it had a bump not so long ago.he said there's nothing wrong with the car which i find hard to believe,i know he's a mechanic but still it seems fishy.he's offerering it to me for about 600.seems dead cheap for what it is i feel something is up,iv breifly looked them up and they seem to be going for about 2 grand! :( something has to be wrong with it surely.iv decided to sell my car and get a faster punto and this one would be perfect! but 600 pound, wow that's ridicilously cheap, any help appreciated on what to do

cheers

That is very cheap for a decent GT...if I were you I'd check the mileage, and the condition of the car...listen to it running for knocks and ticks...look for oil leaks....all the usual sort of checks you'd give a second hand car

i would check it isnt stolen and such have a hpi check done for 30 quid or whatever it's called

Good idea pip...mind be dodgy.
I'd possibly consider looks at engine numbers and chassis numbers as well...just for ott peace of mind.

yes engine number is on the chassis plate for a comparison also and chassis number is under carpet drivers side under a plastic cover

not sure on the turbo engine were it is but can tell you fiat engine numbers are always easy to find

maybe someone an tell you on here so it looks like you know what your looking for

also check front and rear chassis for damage may be a dodgy repair and also chassis numbers are printed on windows

Thanks for all your help guys,im going to go have a look at the car next week hopefully..il do everything you said to do and post back when i know more(y)

cheers!

Also check rear trailing arms, they have a tendancy to go on the mk1's.

Check for either blue or thick white smoke on idle and when boosting.

Make sure it's not revved hard from cold or taken onto boost whilst still warming up.

* If at all possible compression test it* I failed to do this when buying mine and figured out a few weeks down the line that the head gasket was on its way out.

Hey guys, went to see the punto today and well..i aint buying it the car is absolutely thrashed,he's blown the head gasket on it for starters and i think the drive shaft is ruined.no chance!
