Hi, All

Not sure when my timing belt was done has no history on the car.

I have a punto Mk1 1999 V reg Team 60 8v 1.2

If it breaks would it damage the engine has i have read that some engines not break.

Thanks
Tony

I have a Mk1 1.2 60 s...

Does this mean that, if mine was to snap, then i will only have to pay for a new one. not like £800, for it to be fixed?

Thnaks alex

If its an 8v then it is a "safe" engine which means that pistons/valves etc cant hit each other and cause damage. So its not major if you dont get it lined up quite right (although it will run rubbish) If its 16v then could result in damage if you get it wrong.

Hi guys first of all yes im female and im blonde so bear with me lol. (y)

I have a punto HLX 16v Vreg and the cam belt went. :( Ive read on here that some engines are safe and wouldnt have much damage if the belt went. Please tell me im one of the lucky ones and its not gonna cost me £100s to get back on the road!! :bang:

Sadly... your car is a 16valver... much damage potential... :(

The worst thing that can happen with an 8V is if the timing is set 180 degrees out it can backfire and blow a hole in the inlet manifold. But done carefully you wont do any harm if the timing isnt 100% right.

On the 16V you are looking at least at 2 new valves but could be many more if it was slipping tooth by tooth. Its not going to be cheap, but the 1.2 is not as bad as many other car brands.

bad news is it isnt going to be under 100, good news is we have a fiat specialist forum trader who has very cheap rates for labour in your area (sorry it wouldnt let me post the next bit lol)

welcome to the forum

Thanks for the replies guys, sadly it looks like ive got to scrap my poor little Freddy

Even tho pauls prices are really good by the time id added on the cost of getting towed over to him, it would cost more than my overdraft could cope with(n)

 A word of warning if your gonna buy a car from a friend!!, make sure you get someone who really knows about cars if you know any, to check it for you. Dont just rely on your trusting your mate. Ive only had my punto 4 weeks doh

If the age of the cam belt was suspect it should be changed anyway because when they break its usually costly one way or another. What is the remainder of the car like? Taken at face value it does seem heavy handed to scrap it for want of a £50 cam belt.

Hi whitesei, (y) The remainder of the car is fine. but with the cam belt gone, and not knowing how much damage has been done, i would imagine its gonna cost quite a bit to get fixed, plus id have to find someway to get it to the nearest garage. And being female and blonde some of the mechanics would have a field day in over charging. ;)

If its an 8V there will be no damage. Just fit a new cam belt. If its a 16V its more costly with bent valves etc.

You could consider a mobile mechanic or better a small garage that depends on its good reputation. They should collect the car.
