Hi,

I have a nice shiny silver 1.6MPI punto cabrio. my intention all along was to buy a complete punto turbo and transplant the engine across. I'm an engineer and transplanting the bits and bobs across (oil cooler etc.) doesn't concern me.

What does concern me;
I will need to take the ECU from the turbo, will it be as easy as replacing the chip in my cabrio keys with the one out of the turbo keys for the immobiliser?

I presume that under the bonnet on the cabrio will be the same as any mk1 punto?

The brakes seem good on my 1.6 cabrio, does the turbo have discs on the rear, does anyone know if the rear suspension setup on the cabrio differs from the standard mk1 bodyshell?

I have heard that the original turbo is usually shagged after 80,000 miles. Is there a way of testing the turbo on a car i'm looking at buying or should I get an AA or RAC inspection?

Has anyone ever done this before? what problems did you have? or can anyone see any problems that I might encounter?

How fast is a punto with 135bhp?

Thanks

Craig

you are an engineer, you should have a better idea of what is shagged than aa or rac.
the gt has big vented front brakes and rear disks, just swap every thing, subframes brakes suspension and all locks, job done

I'm a hydraulic engineer, I could overhall a 18-ton hydraulic ram but wouldn't know where to start with a automotive turbo charger. I was more meaning that i'm quite a practical person!.

Cannot swap all locks, the cabrio boot lock (and possibly the door locks) are unique to the cabrio. Can you see a problem with just swapping the key transponder over?

Does anyone know if it will be as easy as swapping the sub-frames?

I think I need a Fiat parts catalogue to see what components are comment between the cars, anybody got a source for a complete parts catalogue?

There is a user on PuntoSportsClub that has a cabrio GT...username is Cat ...the conversion was either by Puntoboy or Dean if I remember rightly.
Personally I wouldn't even contemplate the conversion without swapping the brakes as well...just for piece of mind.
Are you not getting the keys with the donor car? In which case you'd just need to swap the locks and barrel....I don't see why the cabrio should have unique locks when the rest of the range don't.

Mawbster also has a GT cabrio. Interesting, you'll change the engine, brakes, exhaust, ecu, etc. but some locks faze you :) Man, after all that work whats a few locks?
Answer is on here under the search button ;)

an answer is delock with door poppers :D

Kristian

Tryin' to keep it original, locks will stay.

Has the mk1 turbo got ABS, will I be able to replace the rear subframe without changing the brake slave (is it the same setup for both drums & calipers)

Thanks

You don't need to change the servo or master cylinder from the cabriolet. Use your existing parts with the GT calipers. I've taken pictures of what I changed on the cabriolet I converted. I'll dig them out.
