Hi all, my 1999 Punto mk1 60s has developed a slight oil leak from the offside output shaft from the differential box at the rear of the engine/gearbox. The oil is thrown onto the exhaust front pipe where it passes underneath and burns off creating quite a stink when stationery. Is this easily fixable, with the box insitu (shaft withdrawn) or has the box to come out, are any special FIAT tools required? Any advice would be appreciated.

it can all be done insitu yes

but you must work out witch seal is leaking before you buy anything

could be drive shaft seal or could be the o ring around the casing holding the diff
pre load shims

on second forts you may as well buy both as you will be disturbing one to get to the other anyway

I've just done the same job on a 55S (no anti roll bar) diconnect steering arm & bottom suspension ball joints & anti roll bar? this allows you to pull drive shaft out of tripod joint the stub shaft came out with help from a blunt chisel & a big hammer Lever out old seal tap in new seal refit stub shaft tap on end pops it back in. refit drive shaft etc. This worked for me! no more choking every time I stopped in traffic.

Hi all, Just a query re the diff oil seals on a 2000 Mk 2 1.2 8v Punto 5 speed. Peter and I are changing the diff oil seals. When the seals and shafts are refitted, there seems to be free play on the diff bearing. I checked the Haynes Punto manual but it had no cross sections diagram or any info. I had an old Haynes for a 1988 Ritmo and it referred to a shim and a bearing preload. We removed the shaft again and checked the dimension as per the Ritmo gearbox instructions and the shim fitted is too thin ( or the previous person who replaced the seals during the cars 60k miles history forgot to refit a shim). Is it ok for us to refit the seal with a new shim got from Fiat so as to have a 0.1 mm preload on the bearing as per the Ritmo gearbox instructions?

PS Peter did change the clutch, change the brakes / pads and also the wiper motor on his own. I only had to advise. He followed the Haynes instructions but he thought it asked to dismantle too many items. He has an electrical snag which he will ask about when he learns how to use the forum ( he hates typing )
