hi, can anyone tell me which oil goes in the punto sx60?

manual says mineral oil 15w 40 or semi synth 10w 40. but thought best clarify.

i would have thought semi synth is better oil that mineral as mineral is more cruder and doesnt have the man made additives.

Use a semi-synthetic 10W40 from the manufacturer of your choice.

The thing to look for is the API rating... it's the letter after an "S".. so they are in the range SL, SM, SN, SO and so on.

Most semi synthetic oils are around "SM". The car manual probably specifies something as low as SG.. so any semi-synthetic oil you can buy will be several grades higher than this. I think it's impossible to buy SG oil these days.. even mineral Castrol GTX as Crabbo uses is "SL", I think.

Use the right grade, keep it topped up to MAX and change it every year and your motor will last forever.

Don't overlook "cheap" oils.. the Halfords (green bottle) semi-synth 10W40 has a higher rating than Castrol's Magnatec and you get 5ltrs for the price Castrol charge for 4.

I don't know why the manual suggests 15W40 mineral. It'll be thicker when cold than 10W40.. but not much. Use the thinnest oil your engine accepts.. 10W40.

Selenia is made by "FL" (formerly "Fiat Lubrificanti") but I think they are independent now (hence "FL"). Fiat sold it as part of their cost-cutting measures a couple of years ago, to pay for the new Punto. :)

i tend to change the oil on my car every 3 months...sometimes every 2 months regardless of miles done. oil changes are important as it is the life blood of the engine.

with this car (punto) which belongs to my friend im trying to help her get it serviced and its currently in my possession. thanks for your help. i bought fuchs 10w 40 semi synth and a new filter for it.

I think you've bought exactly the right oil for the car, Fuchs are a top make and the oil should be good for a year easy. 15/40 is the correct grade for 80's/90's Fiats, they recommend the Selenia which is semi-synthetic but it's nearly impossible to find a semi in 15/40 (Comma XT2000), nearly all are 10/40 or lighter. Castrol do a 10/40 Magnatec semi-synth, but their 15/40 Magnatec is a mineral with "synthetic technology".

There's no point changing your oil every 2-3 months unless you're a taxi or racing driver (or a 1.4 Bravo owner), if you do then stick to the cheapest 15/40 mineral and cheapest filter you can find, you're just wasting your money on semi-synth.

Great answers. I also bought the fuchs 10w 40 (Titan XTR) cost me £18.95 for 5L, is this the goin rate or did I pay more ?
